Random takeaways from various recent Nas interviews about his latest album King's Disease
2020.08.23 19:48 jensyaoRandom takeaways from various recent Nas interviews about his latest album King's Disease
not sure if you seen all the nas webinar interviews he's done surrounding his latest album, but i've posted it on this subreddit for reference...or just filter your nas searches on youtube for this past week or month
a lot of this is me processing and paraphrasing what was said...Nas overthinks his lyrics to the point that the backstory from the interviews is more compelling that the lyrics themselves...having lyrics rhyme while retaining the message, even if you are a wordsmith, is difficult and people miss bars all the time...so not only is the message reduced to a simple rhyme, people can also miss the message, sometimes due to that simple phrasing or the over-saturation of beats, so that is why some lyrics are very literal and not convoluted to convey the message...also, genius.com is notorious for deleting annotations due to frivolous reasons so I guess I am keeping a copy here in case someone years later is googling to find the context to King's Disease.
premise, to catch up to speed (google it, or ask if you need more reference):
first of all, nas lives in LA if you didn't already know, but he reps Queensbridge from afar because he's lived there long enough and has connections to still talk about hood politics, like he did on "not going back" and "qb politics". he used to live in a mansion in Georgia during the street's disciple/hip hop is dead era, which is ironic two-fold because in seclusion, Nas got a lot of songs done, hence the double album but it's a slept on album and was overshadowed when it was released because 2004 was a big year in rap. the other irony is that nas claimed hip hop is dead in 2006 while residing in the south, so the collective southern rap listeners and artists took offense to that when southern rap was on the rise and nas had to collaborate with the likes of rich boy, lil wayne, david banner, rick ross, dj khaled, and young jeezy and whomever else popping at the time to win back the appeal to those southern artists and listeners
Nas obviously likes beats that 'has breathing room' to let his words overlay the tracks for listeners to get the message instead of just instrumental-heavy 'club banger beats'....either the track resonates to him or Heavy D, who died, made a beat specifically for Nas to rap on on "The Don"...when it comes to big name producers like Pete Rock, Nas is reluctant to release tracks because he does not want his latest releases to "tarnish the legacy" of legendary producers, which is what happened to those tracks being eventually released on Lost Tapes 2...so that is partially why Nas likes to work with lowkey producers like salaam remi, etc to ease the pressure off and why that DJ premier, etc joint albums wont happen
Nas likes to work with producers that take initiatives on songs. if you are persistent like DJ Khaled who goes the extra mile to convince you to do a verse in every which way possible, eventually, that wears off and Nas hops on the song...just look up what DJ Khaled had to do to get Jay-Z to do a verse...Khaled had to move his whole family to New York for like 8 months or something and hang where Jay-Z likes to frequent from being at the gym shooting hoops when Jay-Z arrives at the gym to random borderline stalker stuff like being in the same meetings and yacht parties until Jay-Z gave in...and Khaled has the secret sauce of his inspirational speeches and the way he picks beats to little things like setting the thermostat to a certain temperature (Akon) to get the best from the artist...when you listen to "nas album done", it has contributed khaled signature phrases all over the hook as well as samples Lauryn Hill, someone Nas is a good friend of and admires...some producers like pharrell premade the hook in the demo instrumental and a lot of rappers end up going with the direction of pharrell's original hook because rappers can write bars to that hook but the hardest part of a song is creating a compelling and catchy hook for it to be a song and not a non-cohesive freestyle...so when kanye decided to produce a whole Nas album (after kanye promised obama), Kanye's strong initiative/persuasion and last minute beat selections made Nas to create the album regardless of how hectic the conditions were -- from frantically trying write within a week's deadline after waiting around the week prior from pusha t's release, to performing a song in one take with rhymes not in pocket and getting ridiculed by the likes of crooked i and joe budden, and shipping it with an 1.5 day delay while being overshadowed by a surprise beyonce/jay-z album ambush release that same weekend. what Kanye contributed to Nas' album was the artwork, some hooks, the beats, various connections for collaborations, and the 7 sins theme because Kanye was on his religious theme. Credit goes to Kanye for breaking that 6-year dry spell of Nas being of unable to release an album for whatever reason and being true to yourself to stay relevant in the public's eye by reinventing yourself to reflect your thoughts of today in the messages of the songs.
Nas has "recorded a bunch of shit" over the years but he is sporadic with his studio sessions and he's not always in the studio like eminem...therefore, a lot of producers who lives within close proximity has to be on-call whenever Nas is looking for beats and is in writing mode. nas has to live life for a while to soak up information before he has enough wisdom to put it in content-rich prose. it's not really explained why Nas' sessions with swizz beatz eventually dissolved and didn't become an album...both sides spoke in positive euphemisms about the 3 tracks that were eventually released...swizz was also in in the LA area and if you want to produce for Nas, living in close proximity to Nas/LA as a producer is KEY, hence hitboy, who is a LA native. swizz has enough range as a producer but maybe Nas didn't have enough accommodations like "moral support" or "initiative" from the producer to reassure or reaffirm what Nas was writing was relevant to the culture to put it in permanent song form. the reassurance and reaffirmation, especially from the producer, who is first to judge your songs is key in overcoming "the legacy problem" with preserving the integrity with Nas' discography
i don't know why swizz beats collaborations are so hit or miss like 'summer on smash' from life is good sucked...like why the fuck does swizz want to rap or sing on every one of his songs by being on the chorus or intro and fuck it up with his corny rhymes? at least mannie fresh was funny when he did it but swizz is straight corny. swizz wants to rap and claim feature on his own productions so bad and having nas on the record just temps him even further...like when swizz did "echo" it was good but was unnecessary with his intro because Nas killed it with the first line of that song, and swizz over-cooks most of his beats by adding cacophonic generic "what" yells on "no bad energy" ...it just feels like Nas just lets swizz take advantage of him by spoiling the whole song and replay-ability of the message every time they collaborate and swizz voice sounds like I am getting a wet willie in my ear every time i hear him...nas is too much of a nice guy when not putting restraints and swizz's ego is too big headed because swizz wants to chase the "high" of trying to relive the moments of his past DMX productions had he just rapped on those too, because i think swizz claims more residuals when he is an feature on his own productions as well, so it's very money-motivated, but his actions spoil it for the fans when enjoying the music had swizz just did the beat and not show up vocally on all of his songs
Nas is a thinker and overthinking can lead to less creative energy for the sake of hip hop, which can instill in self sabotaging beliefs and behavior for thinking this song is not good enough for the standard of Nas, but the unreleased songs are still a lot better than most rapper's whole careers...ugh but true. unless the rapper was on drugs like gucci mane/lil wayne or have self esteem to the Nth degree like Kanye to care less about public perception, the producer has to step in and take this initiative and contribute to connecting nas with possible collaborations, the hook, and the grand direction, Otherwise, Nas tend to "over-think the songs he's writing" -- direct quote from "Back When," as commented by No-ID...that is why passive producers who just send the beat without much context doesn't end up with Nas completing the track (unless it was Ether, when nas was motivated by external revenge...and this is partially why 9th wonder keep on sending Nas beats but we have yet to hear a 9th produced Nas song and 9th still lives in north carolina and that's also a disadvantage) because Nas has to get some accommodations out of the interactions of working with various people in-person to create art...or the beat has to be super intricate with the producer in-person for Nas to start creating (alchemist, c-sick, etc) or he's compelled to do an one-off song because of some sponsored corporate backing (levi's - 'hey young world', redbull - 'film', nike - 'classic', hyundai - 'regeneration', sprite - 'AZ and Nas sprite freestyle', etc)
Nas is able to release lost tapes from his Def Jam days, from Hip Hop is Dead to Life is Good (2006-2012), because his albums are jointly released by both Mass Appeal and Def Jam, from Nasir (2018 onward) -- not sure if Nas still has any obligations with Def Jam to complete more albums for his contract or if his contract is lucrative enough to stay because of his legacy status when initially signing with Def Jam, but somehow he is also able to joint-release it under his own label. There's a trail of unreleased, unfinished tracks from Nas' Columbia days but there are still songs in the vault or barely ever heard that were done under Columbia and Nas would need to work out a joint distribution deal with Columbia and Mass Appeal if he were to release a Lost Tapes album that hosts his songs from his Columbia days, from illmatic to street's disciple (1994-2004)...If he reworked I Am and Nastradamus into the original double disk as it was intended, I would pay/sign a petition for that. If Nas were to remaster old tracks and release it under his own label, technically, those would be "new" tracks because the remastered quality technically is "different enough lawfully" to have a remastered release under sole distribution or new contract negotiations but I am not sure if Nas is more likely to spend time on investments than rehashing old songs like he constantly does for illmatic on anniversaries, but for other Columbia projects....Nas needs to ask what Diddy did to make the bad boy 25th anniversary compilation album of remastered songs and if he could do that to make a compilation remastered songs to recreate I Am Nastradamus as the intended double disk
Hitboy checks a lot of boxes: lives/works relatively close to Nas and is accommodating towards completing songs with reassurance as a producer. has range as a producer and has experience with past projects with big name artists with that contemporary generation sound. has connections with new artists with the likes of lil durk (which nas likes) and asap ferg to collaborate with what the new generation of rap listeners are into....another plus is that Nas feeds off youthful energy while having mature deep conversations with producers willing to give his time of day...some producers are cardboard when it comes to their personality besides being a good beat maker and nas probably needs to build a deeper rapport in terms of common circumstances growing up or common struggles to have someone to sharpen or cosign nas' messages on songs...hitboy is that sponge and he also redirects everything Nas said and challenges Nas to channel those ideas into song form. With that clear direction to write on a cohesive theme while keeping a relaxed atmosphere for creation, that reinvigorated Nas to focus and complete his songs without abandoning it halfway or leaving a trail of loose completed songs that doesn't fit the theme of any Nas album thesis.
Nas was originally looking for beats and was not on album mode, but was called to show up at the studio after a friend of both Nas and Hitboy saw Hitboy working with other artists. Hitboy was patient with what Nas had on his mind and they had deep conversations with what Nas had in mind as concepts for songs. That lead to the overall theme of what Nas was thinking, which could be paraphrased as "another level, another devil." No matter what heights of success you reach, you are still plagued by the ailments of the habits that drove you to success. Some traits of the successful can backfire, such as the over-emphasis of comparing yourself towards others to the point of jealousy, building your wealth while backstabbing business partners along the way, and having enemies to the point that you have to guard yourself in seclusion, unable to enjoy your success because you have become paranoid with karma and have no friends to enjoy it with (karceno4life, a youtuber astutely suggested that these traits of hyper competitive successful people who are still empty and unhappy with their wealth and accomplishments on Nas' album theme somewhat portrays Jay-Z in a way because Jay-Z always pit his releases against Nas because Jay considers Nas as the ultimate measuring stick in hip hop and Jay needs to outshine as well as control the likes of Jay Electronica for Jay-Z to still feed his competitive hungeedge to still be motivated while contributing to hip hop).
The literal concept of the king's disease is overeating to the point of gout, which happens after your body cannot digest the intake of calorie-rich food along with the lack of physical labor because you have excess wealth to the point of inactivity. Nas was contemplating these thoughts before the corona virus became a pandemic, which further solidified the message -- once you have excess time during lock down for your mind to wander and contemplate on past actions that lead to your accumulated wealth, can you accept and live with your conscience and karma?
So, Nas had these ideas and deep conversations with hitboy and hitboy was telling Nas to put those ideas into songs, by talking about the struggles and blind spots from the current president to the everyday man, with everyone living at the same time restraints under the same sun, moon, and stars. Once the corona virus created the lockdown, Nas said he was lost as anyone else with nothing much to do and Hitboy was the one who persistently asked and gave Nas positive feedback towards finishing those songs as something productive to do and eventually creating a full album around those songs with an overarching theme.
Hitboy wanted AZ to feature on one of Nas' songs and Nas was surprised for a person of Hitboy's age and west coast bias to even know who AZ was, and that this was early in the album creation process to even think about features. Nas knew AZ was working on Doe or Die 2 and called him up to get a verse. Once the AZ verse was secured, someone from Nas' crew ended up asking, why not have the entire Firm on the song? Nas didn't even have their numbers but eventually, the Firm members submitted their verses individually, where the members eventually heard the finished song upon the album's release. Nas collaborated with Big Sean on February and Big Sean put Nas on instagram asking if he was dropping an album, to which Nas said, something like that -- and Nas fans didn't keep their hopes up because of past projects that dissolved. Benny the butcher also has a Nas collaboration that was not out yet when he was on instagram live that collaboration may be on Benny's album. Hitboy premiered one of Nas' tracks during a beat battle against Boi1da, but that was regarded as a loosie or a song that eventually would be on another lost tapes album because "royalty" was also an one-off that ended up on lost tapes 2. There's so many loose Nas songs that Nas fans were waiting on another lost tapes at best but we ended up with a whole nas album. Once Nas' album was released, we realized that some connections that Nas made like charlie wilson was a long time collaborator of Kanye and some themes were a continuation of what the hastily made Nasir album intended to be. There were a lot of rappers on King's Disease that currently reside in LA on the album, such as anderson.paak and big sean -- a lot of rappers who are successful seem to reside in LA, which is a benefit for accessing people to collaborate with due to lock down conditions, especially when having the newer artist connections to Hitboy's past productions. The collaborations that really took effort to create was The Firm, with Dr Dre also in LA, pictured earlier this year on instagram, where we thought Dr. Dre was producing for Nas but instead just had a vocal feature because there was already too many cooks on the production side.
It feels like Nas' team and the hitboy's team were super accommodating to reach out to collaborators once the tracks and the theme were solidified, including the album artwork. Hitboy's ego did not get in the way of Nas' beat selection because what Hitboy thought was hot sometimes did not resonate with Nas and Hitboy proceeded with the next track. The lengthy collaboration list was the need of someone to sing a hook for it to be a complete song as well as some "guilty pleasure features" that Nas would not have done had his own ego got in the way of creating music, but I think Nas somehow transformed and mellowed out over the years by opening up to more collaborations that may not have met his standard in the past for his past albums...releasing lost tapes 2 was probably also a confidence booster for Nas because his throwaway concepts are better than most contemporary albums and the "lack of cohesiveness of a common album theme" are what contemporary rap album already are to keep attention deficit listeners entertained with various topics from song to song. (Nas usually shows up on a feature for other people's albums for his guilty pleasure collaborations and shows up on R&B songs with barely any promotion instead of hosting them on his own albums...it seems like a lot of people owe Nas verses from his past features that Nas has not redeemed for his own album) but Nas may be still shying away from high level lyricist collaborations to the likes of royce, eminem, cyhi, king los, etc...looking forward to if lupe and AZ would have Nas as a feature on their upcoming albums...nas squashing past beefs and reconnecting with past lyricists is a beautiful thing.
Nas probably likes creating albums for the sake of a public therapeutic session rather than performing because he only remembers a handful of his past song lyrics and has to study up because creating new songs gets in the way of having to remember old songs. Life is Good and other Nas songs that deal with the realities of life are underappreciated because people use music as escape instead of visiting problems that hit too close to home, which is why some Nas songs are created as his own venting therapy session that the public would later value as art instead of trying to constantly create hits to please the audience. Nas' messaging style is to always think for yourself but here are some gems that Nas is dealing with for your consideration to expand your own knowledge horizons, which is different from Jay-Z's approach...Jay tells you what to do and consume towards the likes of Tidal and alcohol marketing endorsements while Nas tells the audience to don't be sheep and think for yourself and guide your own actions. With this popcorn culture, it is sometimes easier for people to simply follow what they are told or to follow a trend than to consume time and energy for self sustainability and autonomy but Nas' message wins out long term while reminding you on this album that the grass is not necessarily greener when coveting other people's success and how to cure certain aliments of overexerted traits that got you towards your level of success in the first place.
2020.08.08 09:07 HermanbobGoozA review and ranking of Kendrick's GKMC, TPAB, and DAMN
Hello, I am a big Kendrick fan, but I wouldn't consider myself a Stan like how I would for Eminem or Wayne, but I am a huge fan nonetheless. I've listened to all 3 of these albums countless times the full way through, no skipping, in one sitting, etc. I'm known for having some hot takes, but I promise i'll be respectful about it. Anyways, here we go: To Pimp a Butterfly This is, to most people, Kendrick's magnum opus, his Marshall Mathers LP, his Carter 3. Despite obviously not being my number one Kendrick album, I have to admit he put this album together very well. The idea of an ongoing story at the end of each song that builds off of each other originally introduced in GKMC is sharpened in this project, and it makes for a better listening experience. I know it's kinda against the unwritten rules to listen to this album in a different order than that of the tracklist, but I think it genuinely can be listened to that way. In fact, that makes this album even better: the fact that you can listen to each song separately without sacrificing it's conceptual importance. Wesley's Theory, King Kunta, For Free, and more feature very energetic production inspired by Jazz, Blues, Funk, and many more aside from hip hop while Institutionalized and Alright feature Kendrick rapping about racial injustice for black people in America which is kinda the general theme of this album on top of Kendrick's experimentation of other genres of music in his songs. DAMN DAMN features some of the best musical content Kendrick has created. Each and every song, while some maybe being lyrically weaker, sound great. The slower, calmer songs aren't boring, and the energetic songs aren't too much to handle. Songs like LOVE and LOYALTY feature Kendrick rapping and singing about the feeling of love while songs like FEAR carry heavy weight being almost a storytelling track from the perspective of Kendrick as a child ridiculed by his mother, a teenager with conflicting thoughts, and an adult questioning his worth. HUMBLE features Kendrick creating a song that sounds like it was intentionally made to become a hit which definitely succeeding at doing so. Kendrick almost sounds angry on some songs like ELEMENT and FEEL which, after listening to both songs, sounds justified since he feels like nobody really cares for him or notices his significance in the world. In this album, he was at his musical peak while creating this album, this is his sellout, mainstream hit album and he made it without selling out or going mainstream and giving up his true hip hop roots which is something that happens way too often these days good kid, m.A.A.d city This album is incredible, and still is from the first time I heard it a few years back. A young Kendrick tells his story of being brought up as a good kid in the m.A.A.d city of Compton, California which has a history of breeding troubled African-American youth born into fatherless, gang-infested, impoverished lives. I think Kendrick's lyricism and storytelling in this album is nothing short of beautiful. The production, while not being similar to that of your average west coast hip hop album from the late 90s early 00s era of Gangsta Rap and G-funk, there are many interpolations and references to just that in songs like m.A.A.d city. There are songs for everyone on this album and I truly think, when looking at Kendrick's growth as an artist, I feel as if this is most definitely his best album when looked at from a hip-hop perspective. The bonus tracks do not hinder the album in any way despite not following the story and acting as separate tracks with the sound of the album kept in mind. 10 Best Songs: - How Much a Dollar Cost: This is probably the best storytelling I've ever heard in a song, also probably the best sounding Kendrick flow I've heard. I think this is easily Kendrick's best song. The story starts in the first verse with Kendrick's interaction with a homeless person asking for a single dollar while arrogant Kendrick says no after parking his expensive, luxury car. The short, simple chorus consists of James Fauntleroy singing about how water, sun, love, and breathable air is the only thing you need in life which references Kendrick's avoidance of the "women, weed, and weather" California lifestyle. The second verse continutes with Kendrick starting to thinking about how he is not responsible for his homelessness but starts to feel guilty about not helping him out. Finally, the closing verse starts from Kendrick's guilt and after lots of deep thinking, Kendrick feels as if the worth of this dollar he gives to the homeless man is a guaranteed spot in heaven which is able to be purchased using generosity more than any monetary amount. The song is brilliantly put together and layed down over a calming, blues/jazz instrumental with a hip-hop rhythm. I like to be optimistic, but I really do not think Kendrick can top this song. - FEAR: The emotion is very present on this song and is arguably why it is so DAMN good (pun intended). I love how Kendrick showed his mental evolution from a different standpoint than that of GKMC's story. The song begins with a voicemail from his cousin Carl who speaks on why he thinks Kendrick has a chip on his shoulder. Each verse is told from Kendrick's mind at 7, 17, and 27 years old respectively. From a mischievous child to an emotional teenager to a distressed adult, what instilled FEAR into his mind changed over time when he had different responsibilities and different significance in the mainstream audience. Also, in the last verse, he cleverly sneaks the names of songs from DAMN into the lyrics which despite being a cool Easter egg, it makes you rethink the album's songs and how they really tie into his life. The song closes with another voicemail from Carl which consists of him going on and on about some conspiracy theory that everyone is from Israel or some shit, but I won't let that hinder the song whatsoever. - The Art of Peer Pressure: I absolutely love how this song plays out. The introductory segment with the old school g-funk style beat and Kendrick's singing is nothing short of great. As for the rest of the song, the storytelling is fantastic and the peer pressure theme is very evident through the repetition of Kendrick's emphasis of him only doing certain things around his friends. - Wesley's Theory: Kicking off TPAB, Wesley's Theory begins with a sample that is supposed to introduce the listener to the theme of the project. The funky aura and energetic vocals from Kendrick additional to the singing at the beginning of the verse makes for a fantastic track. - ELEMENT: I feel like this song sounds like Kendrick getting somewhat arrogant which he has every right to do. I love the rapping and the melodic yet hard hitting instrumental. The last verse carries a lot of weight when it comes to the lyrical content with Kendrick first saying how he feels like he gets damned for damn near everything he does, then he goes on about how people mistake his life, similar to those of other celebrities, for the life they see on TV and social media before making a bold statement about black artists being superior to the rest, which is true in a sense since they get the short end of the stick being the creators of most relevant, popular genres of music. - Swimming Pools: The thing I really love about this song is that it kinda plays two roles. It can be looked at as an introspective song about alcoholism and how it controls people or it can be viewed as a fun, party song through the frequent chorus. I adore how the extended version, which is on the album, features a long outro with a final verse that really pushes the song to a strong conclusion. It's a short song with short verses, but Kendrick does not have any trouble getting his point across. - good kid: This is probably one of his most slept on songs. From the Pharrell chorus to the speedy flow of the verses, the song gives an eerie vibe that really serves as a great build up to the next song which really sounds like all of Kendrick's built up energy from this track getting let out. The song's content is very cleverly put together, especially with the "But what am I supposed to do?" part of each verse, especially that last verse which hits hard. - King Kunta: At first I thought this song was super boring, but it gets so much better as it evolves and more gets added to the instrumental to the point where it takes priority over Kendrick by the time the funk becomes within you. The thematic content of the album isn't really too prominent in this song, but to be honest I really don't care. It's just a great song and I really don't have much to say about it - m.A.A.d city: This is the big song of the album that everyone knows about, like DNA or Alright. Straight out the gate, you get hit with a really impactful instrumental contrasting that of the previous track. As for content, Kendrick's first verse is about his experience with how not being affiliated with gangs in a heavily gang-infested area impacts his life and what he sees on a day to day basis. The second verse presents us with one particular memory Kendrick had recently after graduating from High School, an accomplishment that not many of Kendrick's Compton peers achieve. Finally, a dope MC Eiht verse helps the song really fit into the west coast environment that it embodies and if that doesn't do it, the g-funk synths at the end of the song definitely should. - These Walls: Holy shit this song gets you in your feels. The sensual intro really sets the mood before the strong instrumental and Anna Wise vocals come into play. After careful listening, it really sounds like the walls that Kendrick is rapping about are vaginal walls which made me look at this song in a whole different light. The inner walls of a woman, if able to talk, would be able to tell many stories about both her and her partners. They would be able to tell Kendrick a lot about her before she is able to do anything to him. This is a great song, but when the beat changes up and Kendrick raps that last verse, I swear I get goosebumps when I close my eyes and really listen.
2020.06.23 21:47 PopCultureCornFeeling Disgruntled about many things regarding KFAD2 + solution
For the record, I think this post is pretty serious..... So, with DJPK's takeover day happening in less than a week, I figured I would take the time to go through some things regarding KFAD2 to which I was feeling down and disgruntled about recently, ever since the event ended, here's a list of them. -the Silvagunner team wanting you to forget the Joy-Con Men ever existed (To those who don't know, the Joy-Con Men initially consisted of a teamup between Reggie Fils-Aimé and Etika, but however, because of events as the time regarding Etika's mental health, the team removed Etika's character from the tournament due to concerns that unwanted attention stemming from the tournament could negatively affect his well-being) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DwMOD72X4AABbXl.jpg https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DwmkLYBUwAEjaqi.jpg -Geno had lost twice and he did not feel depressed a single bit, as revealed in KFAD Mojo interview posts (Why does this guy keep losing?!) Geno needs love too! -Various characters were ill-treated, badly ( HOBaRT, Pitbull and the Aliens, Men in Black, ZUN, Quote) -Many of my favorites had not made it as far as I thought they would, or sometimes, they preformed very underwhelming (Mr Krabs, Donkey Kong, Jack & Elmo, Quote, Dr. Robotnik) -Mr. Krabs and Donkey Kong losing to MissingNo -How the heck did Mariya Takeuchi and MissingNo get so far?! -The tournament featured tracks by DJ Cutman, Noteblock, RoBKTA and DM DOKURO (who did 17 tracks for the tournament alone), but people took them and their arrangements as a joke still, they must have felt their works are simply wasted talent -Not a single newcomer won the tournament, which to me, made introducing newcomers pointless -KFAD3 isn't happening (although I do think it will never happen, which is fine I also would like to give my opinions on KFAD2, I think it had ambition, but lacked heart and soul like the first one, just like the Dumbo live-action remake. With all those said, I do have a potential solution to those who were disgruntled about KFAD2, including me: Just give all 32 contestants a Takeover Day This can be done based on where the contestants ranked in KFAD2, from highest to lowest
DJ Professor K
Law & Disorder
Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell)
The Jazz Cats
Rhythm Masters (リズムの達人)
"Weird Al" Yankovic
Jack & Elmo
Wario Partners, LLP
Metal Ajit Pai
Off the Hook (ft. Paruko)
Pitbull and the Aliens
Men in Black
So basically, just give DJPK his day first, and then go down, all the way to HOBaRT. Each takeover day does not have to be daily. They can take place months apart, maybe even one year apart. If the team could do it that way, it will show that they love to keep their fans happy. Basically, having only one takeover day feel like a very corporate decision, but here are two choices -Make executives happy OR -Make the fans happy Hopefully, the team will make a decision which would be the best of the channel now (I hope it's the bottom one!)

Background and title
On August 28, 2014, a video was released of what would be a preview on one of the songs working together between Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams. In September 2014, Snoop announced on his Instagram account, his new work together with Pharrell. The LP is the first studio album entirely of hip hop released by Snoop since Doggumentary (2011). Since then, Snoop alongside his good friend and rapper Wiz Khalifa, released the soundtrack Mac & Devin Go to High School. This collaborative album contains the hit single "Young, Wild & Free" (top ten in the Billboard Hot 100). The song was nominated for a Grammy under the category of Best Rap Song. In 2013, Snoop then used his new moniker Snoop Lion, and released his first reggae and twelfth overall album Reincarnated. This album was nominated at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in the category Best Reggae Album. At the end of 2013, he then used another moniker Snoopzilla, in reference to Bootzilla, and joined with music producer Dâm-Funk to launch the entirely of funk collaborative album 7 Days of Funk. In January 2015, Snoop revealed the album's title at the Convention Consumer Electronics Show that occurred in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The track "So Many Pros" was originally a track recorded by Timbaland and featured Pharrell Williams and Justin Timberlake, called "Been It", however, due to Timbaland's album being cancelled Pharrell re-worked the final track, in which Chad Hugo, Charlie Wilson, Pharrell and Rhea Dummett featuring as backing vocals. The video was also shot for "Been It", with amateur footage showing Timberlake recording his portion of the music video whilst on The 20/20 Experience World Tour and Timbaland recording his portion on a beach with skantly clad models. The lyrics to the song seem to have remained unchanged, however the lyric "...so many hoes" has been changed to "...so many pros" which is the title of the track itself.
The album was produced by Pharrell Williams, with additional production by Williams' Neptunes partner Chad Hugo. The duo had worked in partnership with the rapper on Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss (2002), R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (2004) and Tha Blue Carpet Treatment (2006). The partnership between these two artists has earned several singles of successes for both Snoop Dogg and for Pharrell, including "From tha Chuuuch to da Palace", "Beautiful" and "Drop It Like It's Hot", among others.
"Peaches N Cream" was released on March 10, 2015, as the first single from the album. The song features guest vocals from Snoop's longtime collaborator Charlie Wilson. The lyric video was released on the same day. The song peaked at number 16 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles. The album's second single, "So Many Pros", was released on April 14, 2015. The music video won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Art Direction, during the ceremony on August 30, 2015. The album's third single, "California Roll", was released on May 5, 2015. The song featuring vocals from American R&B singer Stevie Wonder. The single peaking at number 15 on the US R&B Songs.
Bush received generally positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 69 based on 20 reviews. David Jeffries of AllMusic said, "Accept Bush is a delayed dank disco triumph, and then drop it like it's hot, one more time." Brian Josephs of Consequence of Sound said, "Although it's well-intentioned, you're very aware that the only reason you're at this party is because Snoop invited you." August Brown of the Los Angeles Times said, "There aren't many '90s rappers who could credibly settle into a sound like this, but Snoop is an excellent student of his formative musical era." Kate Hutchinson of The Guardian said, "Bush is a high five of an album, made for hydraulic cars and throbbing dancefloors, delivered, in typical Snoop style, as if from a fur-lined throne overlooking a pool party." Kellan Miller of HipHopDX said, "Snoop and Charlie Wilson play off each other's energy, and the instantly catchy nature of the track justifies the notion that the diminished returns of Bush are the result of an excellent dream deferred by poor execution." Phil Hebblethwaite of NME said, "Snoop takes a surprising back seat, singing low in the mix and seldom rapping--an odd decision, but it works and when Bush is good, it's an absolute joy." Jonathan Frahm of PopMatters said, "All in all, Bush is another consistent release from Snoop to add to his portfolio, with enough freshness to still be spinning his name in the clubs." Roger Krastz of XXL said, "Overall, Bush is a fun and enjoyable listen from start to finish with the album's retro imagery brought to life by Snoop Dogg and his slick persona." Julian Kimble of Pitchfork said, "While Bush is strong enough musically, you can't help but wonder what would've happened if this crew had followed R&G with a full-length a decade ago, when everyone involved was still in his prime." Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone said, "From the moment opening track "California Roll" hits its "Drop It Like It's Hot"-ish bass line, Bush is a pleasant stroll down memory lane." Kris Ex of Billboard said, "It's a quick listen, clocking in at less than 45 minutes, and the 10 tracks are laid-back--perhaps too much."
In the United States, Bush debuted at number 14 on the US Billboard 200 with 32,000 album-equivalent units, which included 27,000 pure album sales, marking the third highest debut of the week and the eighth best-selling album of the week. The album was also streamed 2.8 million times in the first week. It serves as Snoop's sixth solo album to debut at number one on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Bush dropped to the number 44 in its second week, earning an additional 12,000 album-equivalent units, which included 9,000 pure album sales. In the United Kingdom, the album debuted at number 25 on the UK Albums Chart. Bush was Snoop's tenth solo album to debut at top-ten on the UK R&B Chart, reached at number two. As of May 2016, the album has sold 250,000 copies worldwide.
2020.05.08 03:58 SkyBruceLee23Solace Dynamic Daddy - Novel Concept/Short Story
Hi guys I attempted to write a novel six years ago and instead it became a short story. I got discouraged after I sent my story to literary agents and publishers and got nothing but rejections. I came across the story in my email and it reignited my imagination. The story I wrote isn't perfect and it has a few mistakes but I wrote it back in 2014. I wanted to get an opinion from you guys. I hope you guys like it even though it's a rough draft. I even created a cover to my story and I imagined that it was a published novel. The cover to the story is in my profile. Yeah, I know that sounds insane. So here's my old story and the title of it is Solace Dynamic Daddy. If you guys like my story, please share it. I wrote it to make it like an action movie. CHAPTER ONE Adam held his son Jaden with one arm as he folded up a shirt. The father smiled laying a kiss on his child, and watching the four year old as he tried to help him fold his tank top. Adam chuckled watching his son assist him in laying his tank top inside of his luggage. Jaden giggled when his father tickled him unexpectedly. The child grabbed on to his father’s jeans, helping his daddy fold up the pair of pants, and looking over his daddy’s shoulder when he heard the footsteps of his mother entering the bedroom. “Aw look at my baby.” Vivian said through a giggle walking up and kissing her son on the lips. Jaden grinned at his mother after her lips came in contact with his little mouth. Adam smiled while turning his head to kiss his wife. The man locked on to his wife’s moist full lips being reminded that it was not only his wife’s beauty and personality that hooked him when they first met. It was her kiss that told him that she was the definitely the woman for him. “I can’t believe were going to Aruba.” Vivian gave her child and her husband an excited stare. She studied the Australian morning sunlight as it shined in through the bedroom window resting against the side of her son’s face. “We’re going to walk along the sandy shores on the beach. Go swimming in the ocean.” Vivian whispered slightly to her son slowly taking him out of his father’s arms. “Daddy said there’s no trauma engineers in Aruba. Is Aruba safe just like where we live?” Jaden asked his mother making himself comfortable beneath her warm and shapely arms. Vivian looked at her husband while fixing her mouth to answer her son. “There’s no trauma engineers in a Aruba just like where we live baby. Your daddy’s right. So me you and your daddy are going to be safe. We‘re gonna have a safe and fun filled trip to paradise.” Vivian told her child as she rubbed the tip of her nose against his. Adam kept his smiling eyes on his wife and son. He entertained his wife and child by using his telekinesis to fold a pair of his khaki shorts. Jaden giggled uncontrollably as he watched his father fold his pair of shorts without touching them. “Look at what daddy‘s doing?” Adam chuckled entertaining his son and using his mind to make his pair of khaki shorts do the moonwalk in midair while floating around the bedroom. Vivian started laughing watching as her husband’s khaki shorts dance around the bedroom as if they were possessed. She smirked looking around at Adam to see a sapphire tinged white light that was beginning to emit from his eyes. Vivian loved it when Adam would use his telekinesis in the bedroom. It was a turn on for her to watch her husband’s eyes light up like a flash of lightning. Adam was enjoying his son’s laughter as he continued to play with his khaki shorts. Jaden started laughing harder and harder as he watched the light in his daddy’s eyes flicker like a car’s headlights switching from it’s high beams to low beams. “You better stop doing that before you activate your tattoo, and they come looking for us,” Vivian joked with her husband knowing that the cyber smart tattoo that was permanently integrated into the skin on Adam’s left shoulder, was no longer functional and had been shutdown due to a computer virus known as the Deprivator. Adam turned off his telekinesis while pulling down the collar of his shirt to look at the dead tattoo on his muscular shoulder. The man didn’t want to retrace the memories of his past nor the program that he was in that manufactured the tattoo. Adam pulled his collar back up over his shoulder. He lifted his warm eyes back up at his wife and son, praying to God that his family will never come in contact with a trauma engineer again. And also hoping that his kind will soon one day out number the trauma engineer organization that his government designed and built to keep hospitals in business. A trauma engineer had already taken his eight year old daughter away from him. Even though Adam was blessed with the ability to heal diseases. It haunted him that he could not heal his daughter Sameya from a manufactured disease. Vivian watched a distraught expression form on her husband’s face. She automatically knew that he was thinking about their deceased child. Even though Sameya was Vivian’s step child. The woman remembered how she came close to hating god for taking the life of her baby. But after two years she came to the conclusion that it was not god that took her stepdaughter’s life but the product of top secret government technology gone wrong. Government technology that was supposed to help people, but instead its putting the CEOs of healthcare companies back on the market. “You okay honey?” Vivian asked reaching up to touch her husband’s face when she saw the muscle at the left corner of his mouth twitch slightly which would happen whenever he would feel depressed or angry. Adam quickly brought a smile back to his face when he saw his wife looking concerned. “I’m fine. I was just thinking about something. I was thinking how it’s so nice for us to be able to travel and not have to worry about where we’re traveling to. I really wish those Deprivator satellites existed when my baby was here.” Adam paused as he gazed at his son. “I’m hope that those satellites don’t go down and that network stays up. That’s the only thing that’s keeping those engineers at bay except in the middle east. I already lost one flower in my garden. I don’t want to lose another.” Adam studied his wife and son’s matching dimples. He took hold of Vivian’s hand which was still touching the side of his face. While also raising his hand to caress his son’s forehead. Jaden played with his father’s hand which was now swallowing up both of his little palms. “We better finish packing. We got to be at the airport before ten.” Adam said wanting to keep holding hands with his wife and son. He turned back around to finish packing his suitcase but the folding of his pajama pants was interrupted when he heard the dance-pop ringtone coming from his android phone. Vivian saved her husband the trouble of having to walk around the bed to get his phone off the nightstand. “It’s Lela,” Vivian said looking down at the woman’s face which had appeared over the phone’s touch screen. Jaden smiled when he saw his aunt’s face displayed over the screen. He followed his aunties face and his mother’s hand which was slowly handing the phone over to his father. Adam thanked his wife taking the phone out of her hand and looking down to see that it was his sister. He used his telekinesis to finish folding his pajama pants while answering his phone. “Hey Trick Mama. What’s up?” Adam answered his sister calling her by her nickname. He could hear her lips puffing on the tip of her cigarette. “Hey Nightbaby,” Lela said calling her little brother by his nickname and returning the affection. “I got some bad news and some good news to tell you.” Lela paused for a second allowing the smoke in her lungs to exit back out through her nose and mouth. “The bad news is that a faulty firmware upgrade caused one of the satellites to go down. The tower was down for about an hour, and we’re hoping that within that hour a trauma engineer wasn’t able to slip past the network. An hour would be enough time for at least one to get into Melbourne without any problems.” Adam took a deep breath as he listened to the bad news that his sister was telling him. A burning concern immediately arose inside of him as he tried to figure out how a firmware upgrade could’ve shutdown one of the Deprivator satellites. “What’s the good news?” Adam waited holding his smartphone against his ear while worryingly looking around at his wife and son. “The good news is that a simple system restore put the tower back to it’s original firmware. We were able to upgrade the rest of the satellites to the new firmware. But that one satellite was the only one that f*cked up during the upgrade. It’s back up but it’s just one version behind the rest of them. But don’t worry sweetie, the network is back up and going strong. So if a trauma engineer did manage to slip through while that tower was down. He or she is definitely dead by now because of this new firmware signal. Your family is safe, and the city of Melbourne is safe.” Lela reassured her brother when she heard him taking nervous deep breaths. Adam nodded wanting to believe his sister. He calmed himself checking the time on his watch and giving his wife and son a slight smile. “God has given us a gift. If we continue to do our jobs as Solace Dynamic men and women. The word healthcare will be obsolete.” Lela let out a short giggle. She was about to open her mouth to say something else but paused when Adam started talking. “There’s one disease out there that we can’t cure. A Manufactured disease that we haven’t mastered yet. If the government keeps building this disease. We’re going to be in trouble. The X7 has been out there for ten years now, and we have the ability to suppress it but not cure it. The only thing we have to counter the disease for right now, is those antivirus capsules which only protects someone from be infect for a few days. After that bio-suit that the pill creates wears off on your skin. You’re right back at the risk of being infected. I’m praying that God will give us the power to stop the X7. The X7 virus took my baby‘s life,” Adam thought about his daughter, pausing for a minute. “If we can find a way to stop the trauma engineering program from creating more diseases, and put a stop on the one that they’ve already built. This world will be a paradise.” Adam sighed as he went back to using his telekinesis to finish packing his suitcase. He took the phone away from his ear when a strange and loud frying sound suddenly disturbed the phones network. “What the hell was that?” Lela asked her brother after the frying sound quickly disappeared. Adam couldn’t make sense of the strange sounding disturbance as he put his phone back up to his ear. “I don’t know what that was.” Adam said feeling a little dizzy from the strange disturbance which had not only interfered with his phone, but also the celestial power that was being controlled by a transcendent computer chip inside of his head. “I wish the Deprivator network was more effective in the U.S. But the network doesn’t work in certain states. Only forty percent of America is protected. That’s why so many people are moving out of the United States and coming to live here and in Europe. London is protected. Japan is protected. Russia is protected. Most of the world is protected except for the U.S. and the middle east.” Lela stopped talking when she heard her nephew laughing in the background from his father making funny faces at him. “Is that my little nephew I hear laughing.” Lela asked. Adam kept making funny faces at his son while answering his sister. “Yeah. You want to say hi to your nephew?.” Adam asked Lela enjoying his son’s laughter. He took Jaden out of his wife’s arms when Lela asked to speak to him. “Hi auntie!” Jaden giggled while speaking to her. The little boy pressed his daddy’s smartphone against his ear soothed by his auntie Lela’s voice. “Hi sweetie. You excited about go to Aruba with your mommy and daddy?” Lela laughed listening to her nephew release an angelic giggle. “Yeah I’m excited. Mommy said that there’s no trauma engineers in a Aruba.” Jaden looked around at his mother who was giving him an adoring smile. “Your mommy is right there are no trauma engineers there. Your going to enjoy yourself. They say that Aruba is like being in heaven.” Lela could here her nephew gasp in excitement. “Really!” The child said excitedly. He enjoyed his aunties description of the tropical island. Lela chuckled as she listened to Jaden tell his daddy what she had said about Aruba. “I love you. Tell your mother I said hi for me okay baby.” “Okay,” Jaden smiled listening to the smooching sounds that his auntie was making in his ear. The child was about to hand the phone back to his daddy but the android phone got interrupted by the same strange frying noise that had interrupted the connection earlier. “Hello Lela? Lela can you hear me?” Adam could barely hear his sister who was also calling his name trying to make out his voice through the frying noise. The man became frustrated when the disturbing noise caused his phone to disconnect. Adam shook off the slight dizziness that was caused by the noise. He tossed his phone down on the bed before giving his son a kiss on his forehead. “What happened?” Vivian asked sitting down on the edge of the bed and looking up at Adam. Adam shrugged his shoulders confused over what had happened. “I don’t know what that was. I’m thinking maybe the interference was coming from that Deprivator satellite that went down.” Vivian’s eyes widened when her husband said that. “I hope that’s not it. Lela said that the satellite is back up right?” Vivian asked. Her voice filled with concern. Adam molded his hand against the side of his wife’s face not wanting her to worry. “She said that the satellite was down for about an hour. But its back up and running. The only problem is its running on its old firmware while the other satellites are up to date. As long as it does its job and keeps this city protected. We have nothing to be worried about.” Adam smiled while gently bouncing his son up and down with one arm. Vivian took hold of her husband’s hand which was still touching her face watching him as he finished telekinetically packing his suitcase. Adam zipped up his luggage while looking around the room to make sure he had packed everything. “Alright, I think we’re ready to go. The car is packed. All I have to do is put this in the trunk.” Adam smiled pulling his suitcase off of the bed and holding it up. Vivian stood up from the bed grabbing her purse and following behind Adam who was holding his son in one arm and his suitcase in the other. Adam remembered that his smartphone was still laying on the bed. Using his powers. He commanded his phone to arise from the bed and follow him. Vivian turned her head watching as the android phone followed them out of the bedroom and into the hallway. “Hey honey could you grab that for me?” Adam asked when he saw his phone floating in the air beside her. Vivian took hold of the phone as she walked down the stairs. The woman was startled a little when her husband’s ringtone of Pharrell’s Marilyn Monroe started playing through the phone. “It’s your sister again trying to call you back.” Vivian handed her husband the phone. Adam was about to answer his sister. But when he pressed the talk button. The frying sound prevented him from even being able to hear his sister’s voice on the other end. “Lela! Lela can you hear me?! Hello?! What the hell is going on?” Adam became more and more frustrated by the unnerving frying noise that was disrupting the phone’s connection. He had to disconnect his phone when the frying noise almost made him drop his son. “Adam! Adam honey!” Vivian shouted. She panicked when it looked like her husband was about to pass out. Adam caught himself using the front door to catch his balance. The man had dropped his suitcase, putting his hand up to his head and trying hard to regain his balance. Jaden climbed out of his daddy’s arms. The little boy touched his daddy’s face after watching his daddy kneel down on the floor hoping that the whirling sensation in his head would stop. “Daddy? Daddy your eyes are flashing.” Jaden said rubbing his father across the head and watching his eyes flicker on and off like a faulty light bulb. Adam took a deep breath shaking off his dizziness and looking up at the frightened faces of his wife and son. Vivian had kneeled down beside her husband caressing his head and trying to figure out how she was going to call a number for the ambulance that didn‘t exist anymore. The number was 000 which was Australia‘s 911. Since there was no use for ambulances and hospitals anymore because of the Solace Dynamic organization. The Australian government decided to terminate the emergency number to save money and replace it with a number for the Solace Dynamic emergency Department. Vivian’s mind stopped racing. The woman looked slightly relieved when her husband gave her a slight smile before calmly standing back up when he felt his equilibrium come back to him. “I’m okay. I just lost my balance for a second.” Adam said catching his breath and comforting his wife and son. “Daddy’s okay. He just felt a little dizzy that’s all.” Adam reached down stroking his son across his head after standing up completely. “What happened baby? What was that?” Vivian asked through a slight trimmer in her voice trying to figure out why the frying noise almost caused her husband to faint. Adam had no answer for his wife as he looked down at his phone wishing he could stop whatever was preventing him from being able to talk to his sister. “I don’t know if that sound is because of that Deprivator satellite or if it’s coming from another source. All I know is that when I hear it. It interferes with my Iynadom chip and makes me dizzy.” Adam calmly unlocked the front door of the house after picking his suitcase back up. Jaden took his daddy by the hand as they walked out into the balcony towards the front steps. “I made sure we got everything. I got our passports,” Vivian said pulling her keyless car remote out of her purse and hitting the remote start button to her onyx black Lexus. The luxury SUV’s 300 horse powered engine automatically came on when the signal from the remote reached its computer. Vivian started laughing watching as her husband and son held hands while playfully skipping towards her car in the driveway. Adam opened the cars power lift gate putting his luggage inside the trunk. He looked around his wife’s SUV at his car that was sitting in the garage. Vivian helped her son into the backseat of the car. She kissed her child while helping him into his booster seat. “I love you.” Vivian grinned while caressing her forehead against her child’s and listening to him giggle. Jaden put his little fingers through his mother’s scalp. He loved the sweet scent of her hair. The child caused his mother to laugh uncontrollably as he wiggled his fingers through her sleek shoulder length light brown hair. Vivian didn’t want to leave the backseat. She was enjoying her child’s fingers massaging her scalp. The only thing that put an end to her relaxing head rub was the sound of a woman’s voice coming from the garage. Vivian looked up from her child to see her husband in the garage talking to his car. I-Zereon’s sweet, powerful and attractive voice echoed out of the garage. I-Zereon was an artificially intelligent woman disguised as a late model high performance full sized sedan. She was capable of taking on other machine formations. Such as a motorcycle, an ATV, a jet ski watercraft, and also an electronic tablet, and a smartphone. What made her upset was that her designers didn’t give her the machine formation mode of an aircraft. I-Zereon wished that she had the ability to fly, and it pissed her off that she didn’t have that capability. I-Zereon was the only survivor of her kind. There were other artificial men and women like her. But most of them were killed off because of the Deprivator virus. Somehow I-Zereon’s CPU was able to withstand the virus which made her special. I-Zereon was an LMP which stood for Liquid Metallic Person. Like her counterparts. I-Zereon was built to assist the CIA, the NSA, and the U.S. military, but she went against the duties that she was designed to perform. When she saw the double crossing tactics that the CIA, the NSA and the other government divisions she worked for were pulling against her and the people that worked for them. I-Zereon’s skin was made out of a watery metallic substance called MMF. Her skin contained microscopic metamorphosing bio-bots that gave her the ability to comfortably transform her breast, hips, thighs and the rest of her 7 feet tall body into either a 4000 pound sedan or a smartphone that weighed 116 grams. “Hi I-Zereon!” Jaden said waving at I-Zereon after watching her slowly back out of the garage and into the driveway coming to a stop beside his mother’s SUV. “Hi honey!” I-Zereon replied while smoothly converting into her curvaceous female form. Vivian had been knowing I-Zereon for two years. She’s watched her morph into her different machine formations. But it would always amaze her when I-Zereon would transform from her unibody shape of a Porsche Panamera to her statuesque physique of a platinum white metallic woman. Based on how she felt, I-Zereon had the ability to change the color of her body paint if she so desired. If she was depressed on a day. She would choose a color called carbon gray metallic. It annoyed her when someone would call her a gynoid. Which was a term that applied to a humanoid robot designed to look more accurately like a human female with much more realism than a normal android, or of one with a sexual connotation. I-Zereon hated the word because it rhymed with hemorrhoids, and also the word sounded like some type of disease. Adam looked up at the cybernetic former CIA agent. He gave the manufactured woman a half smile when she reached down affectionately touching the tip of his nose. “I thought you were in dream mode. I didn’t wake you did I?” Adam asked his partner looking at the sunlight reflecting off of her white metallic body. I-Zereon shook her head while adjusting the IX definition lens in her eyes so that she could see Adam’s face more sharply. “You didn’t wake me. I was already awake. I stayed up all night surfing the internet. I couldn’t go to sleep. My ears kept picking up on this strange noise that was interrupting my neuro-processors. I don’t know where the noise was coming from. But I heard it all last night and this morning.” I-Zereon told Adam waving at Vivian. She sighed putting her hands on her hips. “ I heard the sound this morning when I while talking to your sister Lela. It was coming through my bluetooth.” I-Zereon explained while adjusting one of the straps on her long light emitting holographic dress. She smiled looking past Adam at Jaden who couldn’t take his amazed eyes off of her. “Your sister already called me and told me about the Deprivator satellite going down. I think that sound might have been a little bit of the residue from that malfunctioning satellite.” Adam nodded his head in agreement as he looked up at the sky to see a commercial plane flying past the clouds. “Whatever that sound was it mess with my Iynadom chip.” Adam said touching the side of his head. He looked up to see a commercial airliner flying through the clouds. “We better get going. Are you going to follow us to the airport in your car formation or do you want to ride in the car with us?” Adam asked I-Zereon wondering if she wanted to go into disguise and keep a low profile just in case something happened. “I think I’m gonna ride in the car with you guys. I know my body has been blessed with the ability to transform into a car, but I don’t feel like driving at the moment. And plus I want to sit next to your little one,” I-Zereon giggled looking at Jaden. Adam smiled turning around and looking at his son who was wiggling and laughing in the backseat while playing with his mother. “You guys ready to go?” Vivian asked getting out of the backseat and closing the rear passenger door after tickling her son beyond exhaustion. “Yeah we’re ready,” Adam answered his wife as he started making his way towards the car with I-Zereon following close behind. Jaden’s eyes widened when he saw I-Zereon approaching the car. The child’s excitement elevated as he watched the tall robotic woman climb into the backseat beside him. “Hi cutie,” I-Zereon said resting her smiling moon glowing artificial eyes on the four year old while reaching out and touching his short curly brown hair. “Hi,” Jaden said softly looking at I-Zereon’s digital holographic earrings. Vivian got into the driver seat looking around at her husband who was just standing by the passenger side with the passenger door open behind him. Vivian could tell by her husband’s facial expression that what he was looking at down the street wasn’t good. “Honey what’s a matter?” Vivian asked. The woman’s question was answered when she began to hear the loud cries of a woman coming from the direction in which her husband was looking. Jaden turned his head looking out of his window to see a woman in the distance running down the middle of the street holding the wounded body of her child. As the woman got closer, Adam could hear what she was screaming. “They shot my baby!!!” The woman screamed as she got closer. Blood from a gunshot wound on the side of her son’s arm was smearing across the front of her blouse. The woman was young in her late twenties. Her black hair was long, and pretty but disheveled along with her clothes as if someone or something had attacked her. “Mommy that woman’s got blood on her,” Jaden spoke nervously to his mother who was still sitting in the front seat motionless and watching as the woman was getting closer and closer to their driveway. Jaden had never seen real blood before. The only blood he was use to seeing was in his video games and in the movies. The child grew frightened as he watched the woman run faster down the street towards his mother’s car. Adam was still standing by the passenger side with the door wide open behind him. The man was hesitate on making a move to go help the woman. “Adam honey she’s coming over here,” Vivian said nervously through a gasp trying not to panic as the woman grew closer. Vivian looked around at her husband wondering why he wasn’t running around the car to go help the woman and her child. She got out of her car preparing to run towards the woman herself. “Honey mommy will be right back, don‘t look.” Vivian told her son not wanting him to be traumatized by what he was seeing. “Mrs. Valtren stay in the car! Don’t get out!” I-Zereon quickly spoke when she saw what Vivian was getting ready to do. Vivian was perplexed as she turned and looked at I-Zereon who was opening the back door getting out of the car. “Jaden sweetie cover your ears. This is going to be loud,” I-Zereon said to the child rubbing her hand across his forehead before calmly stepping out of the backseat. The robotic woman told Vivian to do the same thing. Vivian was extremely confused by the situation, but she did what I-Zereon told her. Adam looked inside the car at his son and wife concerned for their safety. Both him and I-Zereon walked around the car raising their hands towards the approaching woman. Adam was preparing to use his celestial power to shoot the woman and her son. I-Zereon was getting ready to use her supercharged star energy machine gun that was molded into her wrist. But the two of them were interrupted when they heard the loud engine of a car roaring behind them. Adam turned to see the front grill of his sister’s Olympic gold 1969 ZL1 Camero. The vintage muscle car’s tires burned the pavement as it thunderously came down the street before coming to a murderous stop with its body turning to the side from the abrupt stop just inches away from the driveway. Lela took her foot off the brake as she threw open her driver side door, jumping out and aiming her MP9 down the street at the woman and her wounded son. The rap music that echoed out of Lela’s muscle car was soon drowned out by the firing of the MP9. Adam watched as his sister started shooting at the woman and her son. The man knew that it was going to take more than the rounds of a machine pistol to take down the two CIA assassins. Vivian thought she was looking at a woman and her wounded child. But the woman watched as the mother and the wounded boy transformed into two well built men wearing charcoal black polo shirts, faded blue jeans and black steel toed boots. The men had pale and blotchy skin that looked like the flesh of a cadaver, and their eyes were darker than a moonless night. One of the agent’s reached behind his back and pulled a semi-automatic from out of his waistband aiming it straight at Lela. Adam immediately shot a burst of celestial fire out of the palm of his left hand when he saw the assassin getting ready to pull the trigger. The fire shot through the air like a missile hitting the supernatural government assassin straight in his chest and sending him airborne. The man’s body did a few rotations in the air before landing hard on the pavement of the residential street. The other trauma engineer growled in frustration after watching his partner get knocked off his feet. The bullets from Lela’s MP9 were ripping through the man’s body, but that didn’t prevent him from making a mad dash towards Adam and I-Zereon. I-Zereon activated her quasar machine gun. The sleek weapon emerged from her wrist as she aimed it straight at the trauma engineers head. A loud thunderclap filled the air from the high energy weapon firing off. The blast blew the top part of man’s head off, but the satanically fueled CIA agent was still on his feet. The trauma engineer let out a menacing roar as he reached into his pocket pulling out a small cuff shaped device and throwing it at I-Zereon. The robotic woman tried to dodge the mysterious object that was flying towards her but it was too late. Adam watched as the LMP fell to the ground after the device attached itself to the front of her throat and wrapped a steel band around her neck locking itself to her. The device was a weapon called an LMP Choker that was made to lock on to the body of an LMP and infect them with a computer virus called the Razor. The Razor was programmed to destroy the CPU and the life core of an LMP. I-Zereon had ten seconds to remove the weapon from around her neck or her body was going to be neutralized. Adam tried to help his partner remove the device but every time he would touch it the device would shock him with a jolt of electricity. Lela had unloaded all of her rounds. She tried to hurry in reloading her machine pistol to shoot the trauma engineer as he made his way towards Adam. Adam was so distracted by I-Zereon’s screams of pain that he was unable to block the heel of the agent’s steel toed boot that pummeled him full force in his torso. “Daddy!” Jaden screamed after watching his father get hit by the man. “Adam!” Vivian yelled as she jumped out of her car with her frightened mind trying to figure out how to stop the trauma engineer from killing her husband. Adam fell to the ground with the assassins foot now grinding into his chest. “No No honey stay in the car!” Adam shouted when he saw Vivian getting ready to come to his rescue. Adam used his limited telekinesis to remove the LMP Choker from around I-Zereon’s neck. The LMP Choker self destructed. The device blew up after being ripped off of the robotic woman’s neck. I-Zereon stood up getting ready to come to Adam’s aid, but a swift powerful kick from the trauma engineer sent her body tumbling back down to the ground. Adam knew that by the trauma engineer being so close him. His powers would now be limited. The man had a scar on his left bicep that reminded him that you have to keep a trauma engineer away from you at a certain distance if you were a Solace Dynamic agent and wanted to have full access to your abilities. But it was too late. Adam used the last of his telekinesis to see if he could throw the man’s body off of him, or at least get his foot off his chest. It was no use. The trauma engineer belted him with blows to his face and neck. Since Adam was a superhuman man he was able to withstand the punches which would have killed a normal human instantaneously. Adam’s hands locked on to the engineer’s foot. Using brute strength he twisted the man’s foot in the opposite direction listening to his ankle break apart. The trauma engineer was still standing even though he had one foot facing forward and his other foot facing in the opposite direction. Adam had to move quickly as he jumped up grabbing the agent around his throat and lifting him up off the ground. The trauma engineer was smart. He realized his situation grabbing Adam’s wrist with one hand and dislocating it. Adam winced in pain letting go of the man’s neck and falling to his knees. Lela used her celestial fire which was not as powerful as her brother’s but she had to do something. The trauma engineer was getting ready to stomp down on Adam’s skull but his body went back from the blast that struck him in his shoulder. Lela hadn’t used her telekinesis in a while but she had to do something as the agent made his way towards her after realigning his broken ankle and twisted foot. The other trauma engineer that had the gun and was struck in the chest by Adam, was just now waking up from his unconsciousness and was making his way towards Vivian and Jaden. Alonzo stood up from the ground after snapping his wrist back in place. He reached out grabbing the trauma engineer by the back of his neck and pulling him back towards him when he saw the agent getting ready to walk towards his sister. Lela was about to use her telekinesis, but it wasn’t necessary as she watched Adam lift the man’s body over his head like a barbell before dropping him down across his knee and snapping his spinal cord. The trauma engineer rolled across the ground grabbing back. Adam then moved his attention to the trauma engineer who was shooting at him while running towards his wife and son. Vivian shut her car door. She automatically locked all of the doors when she saw the agent getting closer. “Baby hold on!” The woman said to her terrified child as she shifted her SUV into reverse. She slammed her foot down on the accelerator backing out of her driveway and running over the body of the agent who got his spine snapped by her husband. Adam jumped out of the way of his wife’s SUV. He slapped down a bullet that was heading for the front windshield of his wife’s car. The trauma engineer was so strong and fast, that at the blink of an eye he had already lifted Adam off his feet using his index finger. The agent effortlessly threw Adam over his shoulder like a basketball player performing an over the shoulder pass. Even though the agent had gotten passed Adam. I-Zereon sent a shockwave of energy through his chest after cold cocking him in the face, sending him back in the direction he had thrown Adam. Adam was back on his feet. The man was angry, tired and ready to kill. Jumping up into the air, Adam grabbed the trauma engineers head with both hands pulling the agent’s head down on his knee and watching as the engineer stumbled backwards from the pain of the blow radiating throughout his skull. The engineer was about to perform a front elbow strike by bending his arm and swinging his elbow horizontally at Adam’s jaw. Adam counter blocked the attack. He used the trauma engineer’s own body weight to assist him in breaking the agent’s arm. Adam used the back of his neck to snap the man’s elbow. At the same time he rotated his body taking the agent’s limp arm from round his neck and lifting his over 200 pound body up into the air flipping him over his head. The agent went down hard on his back after being tossed through the air. But even while he was on the ground he used the front of his foot to strike Adam in the face. He looked over at his partner who was still laying in the driveway after being run over. Infuriated, the CIA assassin bolted up from the ground popping his elbow back in place while slowly walking towards Adam. “Was this the sound you heard this morning?!” The trauma engineer growled as he unclipped a diamond shaped device from his waistband holding it up and pressing a button on the side. Adam immediately covered his ears when he heard the familiar frying noise that caused him to almost blackout. “Was this the sound you heard this morning soldier?!” The agent mocked Adam’s suffering as he got closer. Lela pulled the trigger on the MP9 while trying to block out the nauseating sensation that the frying noise was causing her. The bullets pierced through the agents face, neck and chest causing him to drop to the ground and let go of the device that was causing Adam and Lela distress. I-Zereon caused the agent to fall completely to the ground after shooting him dead in the face with the energy machine guns in both of her wrist. The robotic woman quickly reached down grabbing the diamond shaped device after watching it fall out of the agent’s hand. “Come on lets get out of here!” Lela shouted pulling her brother towards her and continuing to shoot the agent who was trying to stand back up. Adam and I-Zereon ran into the street towards Vivian’s SUV. Adam ran around his wife’s car opening up the driver side door and jumping in. I-Zereon hopped into the backseat slamming the door. She turned to look at Jaden reaching out and caressing his face with the back of her hand trying to comfort him. “How’s my little one back there?” said Adam turning to look at his son and giving the four year old a comforting smile. Jaden smiled back at his daddy nodding his head while holding on to I-Zereon’s hand. Vivian immediately hit the gas pedal causing the engine of her Lexus to release a low rumbling roar as it took off. Lela jumped into her Camero shutting the door and speeding off behind her sister in law‘s car. Jaden turned his head looking out of the rear window to see his auntie's muscle car following close behind. The child’s heart quivered as he looked passed his auntie's car to see the two trauma engineers in the distance walking out into the street. The men were becoming less visible to Jaden as they stood motionless in the middle of the street with their arms folded.

2020.03.31 22:08 tombernard523I used to be a psychiatrist
Edmond road. In a past life I used to be a psychiatrist. Well, let me rephrase that. Before my life came crashing down I was a psychiatrist, and a damned good one too. It’s tough to really say what makes a psychiatrist “good” at what they do, but I started in my field early, got great exposure and my first few years in the business weren't that eventful. Soon I almost had more clients than I could handle. I’m not saying someone would walk into my office suicidal and walk out as Pharrell Williams but my clients trusted me and felt that I genuinely helped them, so I became very highly recommended. But then all that changed one day. And it all changed with one phone call. "Curtis? Is this you?" Said a familiar voice. It was from Josh, a lawyer friend of mine who partnered up with my psychiatric firm a few years ago. You see, there are deranged people and there are normal people. Well atleast in the face of the law that is. But it's upto people like me to actually rule them out on their supposed lack of mental stability. Josh continued. "We have a new one, one of the worst we've seen". "When can I see him?" I asked "It's not that simple , uh in this particular case, you'll need to come to the station.'' This was a first, I've seen plenty of cases in my time but none that were considered too dangerous to get their examination here in my office. "I'll be there in an hour" I said as I hung up. Malcolm Frasier , that was his name. The computer screen flashed on and Josh opened a tab and typed him some login info. The screen displayed a media player with three videos on queue. Malcolm was Kept in my view, he was eerily quiet but was whispering something quietly under his breath. "It gets quite graphic, just a fair warning" Josh said as he left the room. The first video was of a tiny corridor with a room on its left. The door opened and out came Malcolm, he was holding a fire extinguisher in one hand. And seemed to be bleeding heavily from his palms. A women walked into the view of the corridor, and saw Malcolm and screamed for help but it was too late, after knocking her with the fire extinguisher he proceeded to strangle her neck with the jewelry she had on. After the deed was done, Malcolm walked over to the elevator. The video ends. "It wasn't me" shouted Malcolm from across the room. "It wasn't me". I didn't reply. Instead I clicked on the next file. The video began with Malcolm walking into a room. Room 57. And he walked out carrying what seemed to be a pistol. He walked over to the stairs. The video ends. I was afraid of where this was going but I guess curiosity is an evil thing. I clicked on the next and last file. The video began in the kitchen, Malcolm took a steak knife and stabbed a police officer in the head. He ran outside and began shooting. 8 shots were fired. The camera then picks up from the front desk. 8 people. All dead and bleeding out. He had shot with a hundred percent accuracy, something that's especially hard to do with a pistol and untrained at that. I looked back up at Malcolm. He was staring at the ceiling , still whispering under his breath. I closed the laptop and walked up to him. "It wasn't me" he insisted. "Well, who was it then?" "The devil, but you're not gonna believe that so there's no point in trying to convince you" The devil was a common trope to those who were in shock, who wanted their blame to be reflected by anyone , anyone else , and why shouldn't it be an imaginary demon that no one can possibly blame. "I see " I said. "I'm telling the truth, doc, he came to me, came to me from-from the mirror and he said my name doc, he said my name , he said 'Hello Malcolm'. In a little girl's voice, yes, from the mirror , a little girl." A few tests were given to Malcolm that day, but they all suggested one thing , that he was insane, his lawyer had done a good job after all. A plead of insanity could win this otherwise sure to be death sentence. Looks like Malcolm would see better days after all. I went home that day feeling tired, the videos were still fresh in my mind. I entered my apartment and took a long shower. The warm water on my body felt like a massage after the long day. I dozed off soon after. The Voice of scratching woke me up , I glanced over to an alarm clock flashing 3:33 AM. The scratching ensued, I got out of bed. "Mr. Curtis, it's time for your daily meds" I woke up. The nurse had a name tag on, it read Mariah, like the singer. "You have a beautiful name" I said, trying to distract me from the nightmare. "Thank you Mr. Curtis, the psychiatrist will be in shortly to conduct some tests" she said as she left the white room, white from the padding on the walls to prevent patients from hitting their heads and bleeding out. Sigh. This is what life has come to, I studied the cyanide that I had managed to smuggle in through the place where the sun never shines. It was enough to kill 10 grown men. The water bottle looked tempting enough for me to take it, I couldn't live like this anymore. The cyanide went down my throat pretty quickly, wasn't as bad as I thought it was. The light began to fade, as I slowly drifted into the unknown. My eyes shut closed. The Voice of scratching woke me up. I got up to investigate. The room was still empty, it could only be coming from the living room. I slowly opened my bedroom room and walked out to be stopped by the sound again. This time from the mirror. I walked over to the mirror to see my reflection, but something seemed odd about it tonight. I kept staring. "Hello Curtis" my reflection said..... In a little girl's voice, yes... Yes, a little girl's voice."

Public Information: The information about Empress is rather skewed due to the nature of the abilities. Of the appearances they have made the most notable one was at Ashton State University. There was a fog that appeared at the Gamma Phi Beta sorority house. Only thing that was documented after was that people began to be propelled out of the house only damaging the house and not themselves. Witnesses inside report of some unknown figure appearing right before they sent flying out of the house. Physical Appearance She has dark brown skin with natural hazel brown eyes. Her hair has dyed midnight blue, but her true hair color shows in her dark brown eyebrows. She has a small mark that cuts through her right eyebrow. She isn’t really tall with her just being around five feet and four inches. Her build stands out a bit with her small stature being complimented with muscle. Her civilian wear leans a bit street wear with a mix of crop tops, denim jackets, and jeans. Her shoewear is a mix between Yeezy 350’s and Vans. Her costume is a makeshift cloak that is composed of a fur color and oversized track jacket that hangs down to her upper thigh. Underneath she is wearing a crimson red crop top ,and for pants she is wearing dark red techwear. Her shoewear consists of some blue vans with gold embroidered. Her face is painted with a dark red paint going over the upper half of her face. Mentality She is a balancing act of her desires and logic. She never wants to go back to that content little girl that she was before her trigger. She wants more to be more than just a shadow following behind others. However, she can tell that she is changing into something she could hate. That is something she is willing and accepting of because now she is in control of herself. That control is part of her desire and without it she falls back on the crouches of her old insecure self. Her power has been the main source of her confidence and pride. This pushes her to try and cultivate and learn more about it which is very like her old self. She hasn’t fully escaped the Wanda that enjoys learning and creating connections between things ,but she is tainting those pure ambitions with each action she takes as Empress. She has a close connection to her shard which shows in this persona she has taken after her trigger. This isn’t just a one sided influence as she unknowingly sees her power as something not entirely hers. Which has her seek refuge in her abilities like that of a partner when she is down. Resources

Power: Empress is a StrangeStriker with a minor ShakeStranger ability. Empress can manifest a mist that conceals the area completely stopping senses (including powered ones) from perceiving the inside. The mist covers a forty foot radius around her. While her mist is active around her, she gains access to her Striker ability. Within this mist she is concealed by the mist until she triggers it which then it completely disperses from around her. Her striker ability manifests as a jagged blade composed of dark geometric shapes that seem to infinitely overlap with each other. She can only manifest this sword for a second. However when it hits a living creature no matter the size, they are knocked back sixty feet in the direction the Empress was swinging in. This knock back doesn’t harm the individual ,but this protection doesn’t extend to objects or others who are hit by the person being knocked back. Power Details:
The Knockback sends the person flying back 40mph and exactly 60 feet unless they hit something that they wouldn’t break through upon impact.
When she moves while her shaker field is active it moves with her like a rolling fog.
She must wait ten seconds for her to reuse her Striker ability.
When it comes to power trying to perceive through the mist there is nothing but static as feedback.
Trigger type Single Natural Example Looks up at the hero flying towards her and she smiles waving at them which seemed to irritate them more. “Ready to see stars, Flyby?” The hero peacefully responds with crystallized knives that manifested in their wake and homed in on Empress. She responded immediately with her mist and smirked at the sound of the crystal knives falling outside of the mist. This surprised the hero as they continued to fly towards where they thought she would be. They quickly were great by her blade that dispersed the mist and sent them flying back. They attempted to use their flight to pull against the knockback but was unable to fight against it. Empress manifest her mist again and began to reposition herself for her the hero's return. It didn't take long for them be flying right back the mist once more attempting to use their knives ,but they couldn't pick up on her position even with their thinker ability. So they tried to run in from a different angle to catch her off guard. However, she had been waiting for them to enter and once they got in range she manifested the blade once more sending them through a nearby solar museum. While the hero was being sent back Empress decided to make her escape by leaving her mist dispersed. “Homerun, I really should check out the league.” Backstory: Wanda grew up in a rather normal household in Michigan with both of her parents. However, she could never be satisfied with that. She always wanted to be someone people envied and needed. She wanted just her presence to give people worth like that of the popular kids in her school. So she chased after them in an attempt to work her way up the social ladder that was high school ,but each time she never made it. Her nature clashed with the materialistic views of the people she wanted to be. She was very intelligent and found herself lost in her studies while others were busy partying with friends. This side of her that enjoyed simpler things and learning was one she hated and tried to push away. It wasn’t until Ashton State Univeristy that she decided to fully throw away who she was for someone who she thought she wanted to be. This led her to joining a sorority ,Gamma Phi Beta, and here she felt like she was that shining star that she always wanted to be. She would walk the campus with her sisters and the attention people paid to her along with her name carrying some weight was bliss for her. She even found herself letting out some of her personal secrets to the people who she was growing to trust like family. This was all tossed on its head when she was at one of the weekly parties. There was this toast for the new sisters that joined. After a few minutes of downing her drink she found herself growing dizzy and out of it. This continued as she was unable to notice what was happening as she and the other new sisters were directed out of the house into trucks. It was all just a fun ride with people who she trusted. Then the truck arrived at the broken down building and inside was a crowd of other members of the sorority and some students who went to the college. As her mind slowly started to clear up, she noticed that each new sister was led up to a makeshift stage where a bright spotlight was shined down on them. The audience would be belittle and try to provoke a reaction from the girl. By the time, her anxiety could trigger at this realization she was being pulled forward and onto the stage. The bright light in her eyes made it hard to see anyone in the crowd but their voices echoed through the building. The secrets that she shared were weaponized against her alongside talks of her past. The confidence that she had built was shattered ,and she attempted to just run from all of this. But then she saw that people were moving to block her exit. This is what sent her over and her panic rose to a point where she triggered with her fist clenched and tears running down her face. Starting Reputation: -3D-

2020.02.05 13:02 flotchang66Ended up buying the Inrock Sub so that I could post the Translation of the article for ya´ll. Great Read ! Enjoy
Just translated the Thing myself so bear in mind that Im French and you know what Kind of Reputation we have in the world regarding foreign languages :) Will still be wayyyy better than Google, trust me on that héhé : King Krule : „ I Wish I could sing like Pharrell“ Mixing trip hop, post punk and pop influences, King Krule depicts musically in his third album Man Alive ! a certain british everyday life, the one of the dodgy areas and second zone fast foods. For a long time has King Krule given the image of a hyperactive teenager incapable of curbing his creative thirst as if he could only exist through the tip of a pen. Each media or musical release, the brit intrigues. Impossible to understand how a 25 Yo boy can look so serious and deep, anguished when asked to interprete his thoughts, barely laid out as songs and still sang as Hymns by a youth straying at night looking for parties and cheap Pizzas. Still, there are some hints to follow (no need to remind you that we are here talking about a young man who almost ended up being treated for mental illness and who was expeld from several schools) but impossible to know for sure where does this deepness come from, as well as his taste for extremes and the weight felt in his voice as if it was carrying the gloominess of the world. Finally, impossible to know how this music so hostile to commercial success and reason can attract such a following and praise from the public and international press. King Krule, Abysss explorer of a world collapsing : Maybe is it luck or just talent. But do we ever find out ? King Krule, personally, couldn´t care less about these considération. He simply has an hypothesis to try and explain how he managed to thrive and counter determinism : “It ´s been now 100 years that I am working on very different projects from one another and I am constantly working. I arrived in an amorphous industry and, yet, I am still here. People continue to discover me, sometimes they even like me even though I am doing my best not to do what is expected from me“ he states with his beyond the grave voice we know him from. This voice, Archy says that he comes to term with it (a bit this idea here)/compose with it. Too heavy, not happy enough, clearly he does not like it. “I wish I could sing like Pharrell“ He jokes. We cannot really imagine what would songs like Cellular or Comet with the voice of the american hitmaker. And no, definitely, King Krule is inequaled when it comes to explore the abysses of a collapsing world, reduced to melancholy and terror. We could, it is true, think he is disconnected from reality, imagine him like all these artists who spent their childhood and teenage years wandering from city to city in a Tour Bus and now obsessed with their persona. What could have really happened knowing Archy has been in the picture since 2011. But he took advantage to experiment with everything instead. The styles : hip-hop, indie-rock, Elctromusics etc.), Nicknames (Zoo Kid, Sub Luna City, Edgar The Beatmaker, DJ JD Sports), Feats/collaborations (namely with the friends of Mount Kimbie) and meetings (Jamie xx, Loyle Carner or Rejjie Snow). Still, he has nothing of a maniac elitist, nor of a musician full of himself, because of his becoming rich and famous before the others. Exiled not far from Manchester “The fact that I had to invest myself in music from an early age was a necessity.“ He justifies himself. But it does not mean that I did not have a childhood or that I live in a bubble. I think on the contrary that I benefited from a larger freedom in the sense that I could go to the Brit school, a school where I could dress as I wanted and where I was earning money with Music.“ “It allowed me to party and cultivate myself.” He takes a break and a new breath to finally reveal an anecdote : “Once, I drew penises on every single cars of a London district…it is not mean but this ist he kind of stupid thing teenagers do right ?“, Continuing, King Krule says that he has seen so many things since he is a kid that he can draw definitive conclusions. The principal one : Life in London makes you suffocate, way less free and open than what the multicultural brewing and dynamic local musical scene may let you believe. So, instead of just copying/aping or simulate a music used to the margins, Archy chose to leave the English Capital. He was already talking about it in 2017. He finally jumped in the unkown and settle near Manchester in the north of England. At first, the idea was simply to follow his partner : „I have a kid now, I need to be the closest possible“ he confesses in what is one of the rare mention of his private life. Multiple Films haunt this third albums : Musically, the guy shows himself way more talkative. We for instance learn that Man Alive! Was thought with multiple films as references :– La Planète sauvage, The Wicker Man, Sharknado 4 and even La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, which inspired the clip of (Don't Let the Dragon) Draag On –, that Stoned Again dates back from 2016, that Please Complete Thee is one of the only track that hasn´t been built around guitar, that Theme for the Cross was imagined as a soundtrack and that the atmosphere of Manchester really influenced the recording process. Archy is convinced that „ if you spend a certain amount of time somewhere, you end up becoming similar to what surrounds you“ But not only that “There are so many mythical artists from Manchester, groups with which I grew up with and which gave the city a special atmosphere. As a teenager, I was all about the Smiths. The guitar playing of Johnny Marr was crazy. The one of John Squire as well, it gave a really particular groove tot he stone Roses, where Joy Division owed a lot to the character of Ian Curtis, his voice, his image. But it is not only bands that inspire me. Everything is different here : People, Rythme of life, Everyday Life, even the pride. People in the north of England are very attached to their city. On the paper, we could not have dreamt better meeting. Just like the mancunian legends King Krule also is at ease telling stories about the everyday England, very far from the ones fantasized over by tourism agencies. His tracks are dedicated to the undergrounds/Dodgy area, they say „fuck“ (merde in French litteraly „they shit on“) to the Kingdom, the City and tell about the despair, isolation and uneasiness, chaotic love relationships and every times where, to soak up the drunkenness, lost souls finish their nights in fast foods with gloomy neon lights. Sometimes still, the topic is more joyful, just like when he relates, not without humor, the moment he looses his internet connexion in the train. Often, you feel the misery and the urban disenchantment. And yet, even in this sticky state, even in this blues and misery, and in this way of spuring Pop music, Archy again finds way to be seducing, to create melodies and to go up against the melancholy with realist lyrics, designed to be later sang all together with conviction, the head high. Unclassifiable, unfaithful to any dogma. The mistake would however be to turn this Ken Loach fan in a spokeperson for the English working class. Some tracks of this third album (Supermarché, Underclass) are worthy representative but Archy´s writing seems to be too unfettered and personal to carry any kind of speech : “This music, I do it for me. And even if I have to admit that I am drawn to freaks, it is still my story that I am telling, my vision of the world. Nothing more.“ As subtitles, one could understand that King Krule cannot be attached/associated to a scene. Il He knows England has been having/catching a new „Rock breath“ over the last few years through the sharp riffs and acts of Squid, Sorry, Shame or Black Midi, but he admits he does not feel close to them. He barely mentions the Fat White Family, “Guys I hang out with a bit And with whom I share a stage several years ago“. Everything happens as if King Krule was like his music, unclassifiable, unfaithful/disloyal. Just like The Ooz (2017), Man Alive ! Refuses to choose between rap, jazz, trip-top, post-punk or pop. Only remains the bitter complaints. The ones of a crooner with a proud Cockney accent who never leaves his notepad. As if he was scared of missing the spirit of the times, of missing one of these daily life stories he loves so much, and that he has already been narrating for so long with the most dense, idle and dark words for a young man of a quarter century. “The most Important, is to catch/Grip the listener with the opening line, but also to live what you write. That is why I spend a lot of time alone, outside, in a bar or else, listening, witnessing what is happening around me. Otherwise I could not speak about it“. It ist o believe that yes, this loner really does not have anything of a leader : He is a mood musician, „a boy in the corner“ as put by Dizzee Rascal.
2020.01.25 16:19 ThereIsNoSantaClaus/r/Popheads Album of the Decade #25: Frank Ocean - Blonde
artist:Frank Ocean album:Blonde listen:Spotify, Apple Music August 20th, 2016. It’s a warm late summer Saturday afternoon. Many of us have been glued to our screens for weeks, hoping the moment will come. Finally, finally, Frank Ocean’s second proper studio album is on streaming services. No more rumors, no more waiting, no more misdirections, no more staircase building. The moment is here, we click play, and “Nikes” begins. But before this moment, so much happened, a story that’s almost as interesting as the album itself. tyler slept on my sofa, yeah To those heathens unfamiliar with Frank Ocean, I gotchu. Born Christopher Breaux and raised in New Orleans, Frank moved to Los Angeles at age 19 to pursue a career as a musician. Before his breakthrough as a vocalist, he got work as a songwriter, getting credits on tracks by a prepubescent Justin Bieber (“Bigger”) and John Legend (“Quickly” featuring Brandy). Despite working with two current A-listers, Frank’s come-up would come through a group of edgy teenagers making goofy rap music. He became an early member of the unexpectedly influential Odd Future collective, and along with Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and Syd, would become one of its most prominent members. Frank’s debut mixtape, 2011’s Nostalgia, Ultra, would fully break him through as a solo artist, and by the end of the year he got to write a song for Beyoncé (“I Miss You”) and feature twice on the Kanye West/Jay-Z collab album Watch the Throne. Nostalgia, Ultra was recorded in defiance of a middling relationship with his label Def Jam, and saw him recording over the instrumentals of a variety of different songs, such as “Electric Feel” by MGMT, “Strawberry Swing” by Coldplay, and “Optimistic” by Radiohead. This would later get Frank into legal trouble, as the Eagles would take offense with his use of the “Hotel California” backing track on “American Wedding”, and threatened to sue Frank despite the song being on a free mixtape. The controversy would not stop Frank’s rising star, as he would continue to record music, both solo and with Odd Future, such as the fan-favorite Tyler collab “She”. But things were about to get a lot bigger, and a lot more… orange. spending each day of the year If you’re vaguely familiar with Frank Ocean or Blonde, you’re probably aware of the memetic status of the long wait for the album. While there’s been far bigger gaps between releases and other similarly complained-about hiatuses (just look at the replies to literally anything Rihanna posts), people were unbelievably hyped for whatever Frank was doing next. Why? Well, channel ORANGE. Frank’s highly anticipated and overwhelmingly acclaimed debut album was released in mid-summer 2012, a week earlier than its announced date to avoid a possible leak. It was an album everyone deserved to experience together, a perfect summation of everything that Frank had done to that point. People fell in love with Frank’s abstract, idiosyncratic lyrics and song structures, the warm production, and a great list of collaborators from his Odd Future partners Tyler and Earl Sweatshirt to Pharrell, Andre 3000, and John Mayer. Frank had treaded new ground all through his career to this point, but he was about to jump forward in a whole different way. Right before the release of channel ORANGE, Frank posted a letter, originally intended for the liner notes of the album, on his Tumblr. It discussed his falling in love with a man who continued to influence Frank, firmly establishing him as being one of the first and most prominent openly LGBTQ+ artists in the hip hop industry. He recieved widespread support for his announcement from the wider music community, with the notable exception of Chris Brown, who jumped Frank outside a studio in early 2013. Brown, who punched Frank in the face and whose entourage called him a faggot, would attend the Grammys weeks later and refuse to stand with the crowd when Frank won the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Why is this part relevant? It isn’t really, but fuck Chris Brown. we’ll let you guys prophesy As early as February 2013, Frank was talking about his follow-up to channel ORANGE. In an interview with BBC’s Zane Lowe, he said he was “10, 11” songs into his next album, and was working with Pharrell, Tyler, and Danger Mouse. 2 months later, he would cite the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Stevie Wonder (two of whom he would sample on the final album) as inspirations. In June, he would play several new songs at a rare live set in Munich, which included early versions of future Blonde cuts “Seigfried” and “Ivy”. This would be the last taste of anything new for a while, and the mystery of where Frank was and what he was working on increasingly grew as the years passed. In April 2014, he would post on Tumblr that the album was almost done, but seven more months would pass before anyone would be blessed with new Frank. Rather than an album announcement or new single, it was a lo-fi demo of a song that would not make the final album, “Memrise”. In January 2015, he would post a cover of the Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You Are Love)” as a tribute to Aaliyah, who had done a well-known cover of the song. 2015, however, would become infamous for something different. The Post. On April 6th, 2015, Frank posted on his Tumblr to finally announce the upcoming album alongside a curated magazine releasing in July. Through a misleading caption, the album would be regarded as Boys Don’t Cry up until the final release despite it being the name of the magazine. Hype would go into overdrive, and despite a lack of future announcements from Frank, fans would scavenge anything possible to find details. A picture of Frank on the set of a rumored music video leaked, and people would later find the song title “Nikes” in the director’s resume. This would later be (correctly) connected to a vague Chance the Rapper tweet from July, which he would actually post again closer to the final release. A mysterious empty playlist named states appeared on Frank’s SoundCloud in May, which caused a flurry of speculation for a while but ultimately led to absolutely nothing. Speaking of nothing, July 2015 would come and go, then August, then September, then 2015 itself. In late November, produceDJ A-Trak posted a tweet hinting at a mysterious upcoming song called “White Ferrari” releasing in several weeks. Frank fans jumped on it, with the evidence being: a) an old Tumblr post where you can see what looks like ‘rari’ written on a chalkboard next to Frank, and b) it’s the most Frank Ocean song title you can come up with. Again, this would turn out to be completely correct minus rumors that Playboi Carti was on the song. 2016 now. Frank would stay quiet for even longer, but fans would get a taste with a short feature on Kanye’s The Life of Pablo. Much of early 2016 was Frank occasionally emerging from the shadows, usually doing things that weren’t music like modeling for Calvin Klein. Finally, in July 2016, a self-deprecating post emerged on Frank’s website, acknowleding the many delays and announcing the album would be released in July. It wasn’t. As the final minutes of July ticked away and fans were losing all hope, suddenly, a mysterious livestream began on the website. It showed a black and white image of a warehouse. The New York Times reported the album and magazine would be out on August 5th. This was it. Or was it? endless, timeless People were so desperate for new Frank Ocean music that they watched him woodwork for weeks. Every so often, he would walk on camera and build… something. Clips of music would play, but they were often ambient loops or snippets of instrumentals. Well into the project, with the August 5th date having passed, there was a period of weeks with no new progress or appearances from Frank on the stream, leading impatient fans to search for the location of the warehouse. It would actually be found by Redditors as an event space in Brooklyn, but as the stream was pre-recorded, it wasn’t much help. Finally, on August 19th, Frank returned and finished the staircase, walking to the top and back down, completing the stream. Immediately after, a visual album called Endless dropped on Apple Music. Fans reacted with confusion and disappointment, believing that they had waited four years for something they could only play in one long sitting. However, there was a quick clarification that Endless was different from what people were still calling Boys Don’t Cry. The next morning, the “Nikes” video released on Apple Music, over a year after it was filmed. Things progressed incredibly quickly from there, as pop-up shops were announced for later that day, and it was discovered that copies of the long-teased magazine contained the even-longer-teased album. Fans wouldn’t have to wait for those to get online, however, as the album itself finally, FINALLY dropped on Apple Music at around 5:00 PM EST. That album is Blonde. these bitches want nikes It's pretty clear that Frank wanted "Nikes" to be everyone's introduction Blonde. It was released as a single/music video, the only one from the era, and it's also the first song on the album. "Nikes" is a bold choice for a lead single, a subversion of expectations for anyone coming in expecting a "Thinkin Bout You" or "Swim Good" type track. Over a melancholic, dark, almost ambient beat (and some of the only drums you'll hear on this album), Frank touches on a variety of topics, ranging from materialism to drugs to modern relationship dynamics to a shoutout to Trayvon Martin. Most notably, Frank's voice is pitched up for a majority of the song, almost building up the suspense on this long-awaited album for when the effect will drop. That moment comes almost exactly three minutes in, with Frank's natural voice coming through with the very self-aware line "we'll let you guys prophesy", which feels like a clear acknowledgement of the years of speculation leading to this moment. The final bridge of the album version (the alternate magazine version features a verse from Japanese rapper KOHH) is heartbreaking, describing a relationship where Frank's partner is making love with him despite them not being in love and the partner still not being over their previous relationship. Themes of relationship drama and love in the modern age permeate throughout the album, along with being regular songwriting topics of Frank's. Of course, I can't discuss "Nikes" without talking about the video. Directed by Tyrone Lebon, a London based photographer and filmmaker, the music video features a barrage of different subjects, locations, and abstract imagery with occasional appearances from Frank and a cameo from A$AP Rocky. Lebon, himself an accomplished fashion photographer who has worked with Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, and, yes, Nike, creates these beautiful dreamlike scenes, some of which only appear for brief moments. There is a nude woman swimming in a glass tank of water, hazy scenes of people at a club party, a man on fire, the devil dancing, and at one point, a talking dog. Some shots in the video even reference other media, with the most obvious being this shot of a nude figure in a pile of money, which seems like an obvious analogue to the famous rose petal scene from American Beauty. However, more interesting to me is this shot, which references the infamous Heaven's Gate cult, who committed mass suicide in March 1997 in conjunction with the Hale-Bopp comet, which they believed would bring a spacecraft that would take their souls to another world. The cult members had covered their (TW: non-graphic photo of body) upper bodies with a shroud and worn identical pairs of Nike Decades, an image Frank and Lebon recreated for the video. Considering the songs critiques of materialism and wanting specific brands as a status symbol, you can definitely interpret the shot as a statement calling this type of behavior cult-like. The crushing weight of capitalism sends people in all sorts of weird directions in a search for deeper meaning, some find it in buying expensive shoes made by slave labor, some are exploited by the allure of cults like Heaven's Gate. Interestingly enough, the cult would find itself intertwined with the world of hip hop again two years later when Frank collaborator Lil Uzi Vert referenced them on the cover to his still-unreleased album Eternal Atake. Bizarrely, this lead to Uzi being threatened with legal action by the surviving members of a suicide cult. we'll never be those kids again I've touched on Frank's use of pitch-shifting on "Nikes", but it's far from limited to one song. As touched on in this amazing Left at London video, Frank has something of a reputation for playing with pitch alot in his music. On Blonde, the effect can be used to convey a variety of things, which differ based on which song you're listening to. To me, Frank's pitched up vocals on "Nikes" when mixed with the frustrations about materialism, status, and relationships in the lyrics convey a sense of alienation, his voice sounding almost inhuman. On "Ivy", Frank's voice is pitched up again, but noticeably less, with way more of his natural voice coming through. Considering the lyrics center around a long-dead relationship with an emphasis on how they were "kids", the pitch shift gives his voice more of a child-like tone. The dreamy production, with help from former Vampire Weekend membeproducer Rostam Batmanglij, creates a sense of wistful nostalgia mostly through reverb-heavy guitars and subdued synths. Even more pitch-shifting is used for the rap sections of "Nights" and "Futura Free", possibly conveying a sense of youthful arrogance in the latter, and for the chorus of "Self Control", sung by Austin Anderson, lead singer of underrated indie band Slow Hollows. Quite possibly the only song on Blonde that wouldn't have sounded entirely out of place on channel ORANGE, "Pink + White" is also the album's most accessible track. Another longing love song with themes of mortality and nostalgia, it's still far from Top 40 radio, but the production from Pharrell Williams and a lush string arrangement from the legendary Jon Brion (who conducted my favorite film score, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as well as having worked with Kanye West, Fiona Apple, Sky Ferreria, Mac Miller, and others) gives the song extra punch. Of course, you can't talk about the song without mentioning Beyoncé, who drops by for an uncredited vocal performance, harmonizing behind Frank. As far as flexes go, getting Beyoncé on your album just for background vocals is definitely up there, but considering how Bey was one of Frank's first major co-signs, it makes a lot of sense. The final minute of the song, where Bey's harmonies, the piano and drum based beat, and the strings all swell, is purely beautiful. be yourself Rosie Watson, the mother of one of Frank's close friends, makes her second appearance on a Frank Ocean album on the first interlude, "Be Yourself". Watson was known for leaving passionate speeches of advice to her son over the phone, and one of them was used for the channel ORANGE interlude "Not Just Money". That speech was about money, and this one is about drugs. Watson tells her son not to fall into peer pressure, to not try to be someone else, and to not take drugs unless its under doctor's supervision lest he become a "weed-head" who is "sluggish, lazy, stupid, and unconcerned". While her fears of addictive weed are probably based in daytime news fearmongering, the message of individuality resonates. Frank is well known for doing his own thing, from going off on his own to be a musician to being with Odd Future to being one of the only openly LGBTQ+ figures in hip hop and R&B to literally being on his own by self-releasing Blonde. Frank has definitely been himself, and he's all the better for it. The interlude also features a reoccurring motif of the album, the ambient track "Running Around" by producemusician Buddy Ross, who has since worked with artists like Vampire Weekend and Bon Iver. "Be Yourself", along with later interludes "Facebook Story" and "Good Guy" and the outro of "Futura Free", feature "Running Around" underscoring various figures sharing monologues that define their ideology. Is there a particular reason for using this song specifically? Maybe, but personally I just think it's because its a really great, relaxing ambient piece. The album goes right from being yourself to being alone, two sides of a coin. "Solo" covers the fallout of a relationship, leading to Frank smoking weed by himself in the midst of the dark, empty world. The chorus invokes almost apocalyptic imagery, speaking of "hell on Earth" and "cities on fire". Drugs have become Frank's only shelter from the grim world, but unlike what Rosie Watson thinks, he's not taking them to be someone else. He knows things have ended, but can only escape with his mind altered. The lonely atmosphere of the song and biblical imagery of the chorus are both supported by a single (solo) organ being most of the song's backing instrumentation. James Blake, who played the organ and produced the track, is no stranger to minimalist atmospheres, having created many of them on his solo (ay!) music. Continuing the minimalism of the previous track, "Skyline To" is a dreamscape of a song. There's a hazy guitar, subtle synths and buried drums (provided by Tyler, the Creator) along with sounds of nature, creating a relaxing vibe. Much like a dream, Frank's lyrics are stream of consciousness, ranging from the passage of time to weed to sex. Piercing adlibs underscore many of Frank's lines, mostly saying "smoke", "haze", and "blur". These adlibs were, for some reason, originally thought to be Kendrick Lamar, but this was later debunked when physical copies of Blonde were released with the official credits. keep a place for me One of the album's absolute high points and one of the most heartbreaking songs of the decade, "Self Control" describes the slow death of a relationship. The first half is mostly underscored by minimal guitars provided by Austin Anderson and (Sandy) Alex G, with Anderson dropping in both pitched and unpitched. However, midway through the song, it goes to a whole different level. A wordless, distorted vocal wail brings in a gorgeous string section, and Frank's vocals for the outro are beautifully layered, creating a For Emma-esque multi-track choir, which plays out the song in a way that's both quiet and intimate and grand and epic. It's a painful, dramatic end to a relationship that was once happy, and Frank knows that it will be over that night. "Good Guy" feels like it comes from the direct aftermath of the breakup in "Self Control". Frank goes on a blind date set up through one of his friends to a gay bar, but comes away not feeling much. His date texts "nothing like you look", and talks "so much more" than Frank does. Most of all, Frank realizes that his date only sees it as a fun night, while Frank, profound as always, is hoping for a deeper connection. It's a simple interlude, with the only instrument being a keyboard, but it creates a sense of such distinct loneliness and disillusionment in the face of heartbreak that it's up there with the album's best songs. every night fucks every day up After the album dropped, "Nights" became an instant fan favorite. It's not hard to see why, with its melancholy tone, synth-heavy instrumental, and personal lyrics recapping Frank's life in Houston after Hurricane Katrina hit his hometown of New Orleans as well as relationship drama. The song feels more straightforward than others on the album, but then around the three minute mark things start changing up. Distorted guitar riffs drown out the synths, and get louder and louder before a beeping noise transitions into a ambient trap beat as Frank's voice gets more pitched up for a final rap verse and layered for the last chorus. The beat switch on "Nights" is almost memetically acclaimed, with my favorite being Big Quint's reaction. It's the kind of musical choice that really elevates a song, leading to its current reputation of being the favorite song of every depressed vibe guy who makes slowed + reverb versions of Frank, Tyler, and Lorde songs. Before Blonde dropped, there was much speculation as to who would end up appearing on the album as a feature. Kanye West was floated often of course, along with Chance the Rapper (due to the "Nikes" tweet), Playboi Carti, Bon Iver, and others. However, once the album actually came out there wasn't much of anything you could call a feature. Beyoncé singing backing vocals on a song, Kim Burrell on another, some voices on interludes, Not!Kendrick Lamar on adlibs. However, the one clear actual feature on the album was one nobody could be disappointed by. On "Solo (Reprise)", the absolute legend Andre 3000 comes out of his cave long enough to drop an absolutely fire verse over mostly just piano and occasional off-kilter, experimental drums. It's not a long track, coming in barely over a minute and not featuring Frank himself, but Andre's dense lyrics about everything from police brutality to ghostwritten bars (something that many people took as a shot at Drake despite it being recorded before Drake's ghostwriting scandal broke) create an instantly memorable, fleeting experience that transitions into the next section of the album. don't have much longer baby While there are several songs on Blonde that show Frank going more "out there" than ever before, maybe the best example is "Pretty Sweet". Channeling the orchestral swells on The Beatles' "A Day in the Life", the song begins with an overwhelming, chaotic string section blasting. Frank is audible, but being drowned out by the noise around him, which gets louder and louder before dropping completely. The second section of the song has some reverb-heavy, layered vocals from Frank over neo-psychedelia/dream pop-esque guitars. Suddenly, for the final minute, a drum-and-bass beat drops, which Frank wordlessly harmonizes before giving way to a children's choir, who sing a short outro which name-drops the song's title. The lyrics to the song are abstract and vague, singing about parents, religion, fake friends, and mortality. According to Genius, "sweet" is a term from the south (where Frank grew up) meaning to call someone gay. It's an interesting read, and I honestly don't think you can fully exclude any interpretation of Frank's work. Easily the most memed track when Blonde came out was "Facebook Story". The song isn't inherently funny, but it appears in the middle of a fairly dramatic stretch on the album and features a man with a thick accent talk about fighting with his girlfriend over Facebook. In the immediate panic of the album's release, the speaker was often incorrectly identified as Swedish cloud rapper Yung Lean (who was also incorrectly identified as a vocalist on "Self Control" and is officially listed as having vocals on "Godspeed"), but it's actually French house musician SebastiAn, who had worked with Frank on Endless. SebastiAn tells a story about having an argument with his then-girlfriend where she insists that he accept her on Facebook (or "Fazebuk" as he pronounces it). When SebastiAn refuses because she's in front of him and its unnecessary, she accuses him of cheating on her and breaks up with him. The interlude follows the pattern of the previous interludes, telling a wider story on modern culture. Rosie Watson tells her son to be himself and to not be someone he isn't, something that resonates heavy in our hypercapitalist modern culture, which emphasizes buying expensive status items and creating a Personal Brand to sell yourself. "Good Guy" takes things to modern relationships, which in Frank's view lead to more people just trying to find some fun for the night rather than deeper meaning. On "Facebook Story", a relationship is severed over not being "friends" on a social media app when you're in the same room. Much of modern culture is defined by our status symbols, and among them is the idea that a relationship isn't official until it hits social media. Finishing a four-song run of shorter tracks in the album's second half ("Pretty Sweet" is the longest of these at 2 and a half minutes) is "Close to You". Frank, who had listed Stevie Wonder as an influence on his new music all the way back in 2013, now reworks a Stevie cover of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song "Close to You". It's not an exact word-for-word cover, but the inspiration is clear and a short piece of Stevie's talkbox-filtered voice appears at the end. Frank's verse, delivered through a vocoder effect provided by indie pop musician Francis and the Lights, is about the aftermath of a rough breakup, fitting with the previous interlude. Religious imagery comes up again, with Frank saying he's "preaching to this choir, to this atheist" when it comes to talking to his ex. He's not devastated by their breakup (touching back to the dichotomy of the relationship on "Nikes" and "Self Control") but he's lonely ("Solo") and worried about getting older. It's become ingrained in us that our twenties are the time where we become an adult, find a partner, and settle down, which leads to people feeling pressured to stick with people they might not have otherwise. Nobody wants to die alone and unloved, and it's a genuine feeling of anxiety for many that once they hit 30, they're basically a senior. Things in Frank's relationship may have ended badly, and he misses them deeply, but he still has memories that the two of them shared, and nobody can take those memories away. your dilated eyes watch the clouds float You might remember the "White Ferrari" tweet I mentioned from DJ A-Trak, where he said the song would be heard in a matter of weeks and it would be the best thing we heard that year. While it was more like months, the second part is 100% true. "White Ferrari" is my favorite song on Blonde and one of my favorites of all time. "White Ferrari" is the sound of driving into the early hours of the morning, letting your partner rest their head on your shoulder as you look up at the stars. It's an epic story of a relationship from his teen years, special, valuable, and pure (like a "white Ferrari"), a nod to the fleeting moments we have in this world and who we spend those moments with. The song is sonically intimate, mostly backed with ambient-esque synths and quiet acoustic guitars. There's a really cinematic quality to the instrumental to me, feeling like the soundtrack to a great indie film, and the presence of Jon Brion on the song hammers that home. Frank goes for it vocally on the track too, starting in his lower register, adding some beautiful vocal layering in the middle to create an amazing harmony effect, and ending in a quiet falsetto that could be mistaken for Justin Vernon (and it has). The final verse in particular is wonderfully abstract, with a series of wistful metaphors for wishing things had just been different. We wonders why couldn't they be older ("I'm sure we're taller in another dimension"), which feels like a poetic take on the sentiment from the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice". He just wishes they could go wherever they wanna go, go back to the basics and beginning of their relationship, when they were "primal and naked", a line that can be interpreted as invoking early human imagery or the passion that comes from the start of a sexual relationship. He just wants them to be go beyond their imagined walls, go to where the boundaries are limitless ("You dream of walls that hold us in prison / It's just a skull, least that's what they call it / And we're free to roam"). However, like in many songs throughout the album, there's a sense of depressing reality setting in. They spent so much time together, thought what they happened was special, one of a kind, and profound. However, things didn't work out like that, and now Frank is alone and trying to figure things out. It's a beautiful song, and interpolating The Beatles' "Here, There, and Everywhere" on the line "Spending each day of the year" definitely helps. In another interesting note, the release of the full credits for the album revealed that Kanye West co-wrote "White Ferrari". Kanye's exact contributions to the song aren't known, but I'm grateful for anyone who took part on creating this perfect song. "Seigfried" might be the most abstract and poetic breakup song ever recorded. Frank, in typical Frank fashion, takes a song about the end of relationship and brings it to deep existential ideas, mortality, and religion. Frank is frustrated by the end of a relationship, and considers that he should give up and just try for the idealized nuclear family, living in the suburbs behind a white picket fence with a few kids. But he rejects that, and it leads him down a darker path, one of life, death, God, and humanity itself. Frank isn't normal, he isn't superficial and based in status symbols, he wants something deeper and more profound. He wishes he could see God in a way that someone else could, even just a glimpse of belief, but is disillusioned by religion, something that was heavily touched on in the channel ORANGE song "Bad Religion". Frank wants to be able to believe, but he can't help but think about the fragility of human existence. A solar flare could turn our society upside down or end it entirely in a moment, which makes searches for deeper meaning seem pointless. This throws back to the invoking of the Heaven's Gate imagery from the "Nikes" video. People search for deeper meaning or satisfaction out of life in all kinds of varying ways. In Frank's eyes, he'd rather enjoy himself with film photography and psychedelic drugs. In the end, however, things circle back to what matters in the moment, the death of a relationship. He'd do anything for his ex, anything to bring them back. The psychedelic, dream-poppy production of the song is absolutely gorgeous, layering filtered guitars and keys with a dramatic string arrangement from Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, underscoring the deep existentialism of the song. Because it's her favorite song on the album, I reached out to the amazing GoWestYoungKanye for a word on "Seigfried", and this is what she sent:
"‘Seigfried’ is my favourite song off all time — well, it’s tied for first with Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’, at least. For three years, I listened to it every single night before I slept, at least once, finding it more and more spell-binding and resonant and splendid with each listen. (I’m an insomniac, things that put me to sleep are rare, and I tend to give ‘it put me to sleep’ as a compliment.) For me, at least, ‘Seigfried’ is the rawest song on an album that drips blood; there is something so infinite and agonising about the way Frank sings ‘two kids and a swimming pool’, and calls out ‘brave!’, echoing himself uncertainly. Most people are familiar with the beat switch at the album’s midpoint, and have rightfully lauded it, but the second the strings come in under Frank as he croons ‘I’m livin’ over city / And taking in the homeless sometimes’, acting as the track’s pulse, a quickened heart rate, is easily one of the best few seconds on the album, even if the bassline is only temporary. It wounds me, and it heals me, in the same way ‘Feeling Good’ does. Ultimately, I think the beauty of ‘Seigfried’ is in its honesty: an attempt at subversion fails; Frank is not brave; he’s a fool. He attempts to slot the minutiae of love (his lover’s freckles and his own crooked teeth [among other flaws]) into the hetero-nuclear ideal (two kids and a suburban house with a swimming pool) but comes up empty — as I listen, I find myself thinking of the word ‘emptiness’ constantly, and the track echoes in the empty space accordingly. Sometimes, it's good to be alone."
Thank you Kiki ❤️ "Godspeed" connects things back to the theme of religion. James Blake, who created a religious atmosphere on "Solo", is back in a more ambient take on gospel sounds. There's a prominent organ with some quiet electric pianos, digital strings, and an outro from gospel singer Kim Burrell. The first verse includes a direct Bible reference, tying into a Psalms 23 quote about always preparing a table in the presence of your enemies. Despite how Frank's relationship with his partner ended, he would still be there for them no matter what, and would offer them a place in his home. He wishes his ex godspeed on wherever they go in their future life, wanting them to live safely and happily even when they aren't together anymore. Frank's moving on, and with the knowledge that the relationship is over, still giving his best to his former partner. how far is a light year? This brings us to the final song on Blonde. While "Futura Free" is nine minutes long, it's split into a song and an extended outro interlude. Bringing things full circle by pitching his voice up for a majority of the song, Frank raps about his life, his upbringing, his fame, and the uncertainty of life. He references 2Pac and Selena, two stars who died young. He's living the life he wants to live, but not taking it for granted. He's grateful for all the success he's had, but still nostalgic for his life before the fame. It's stream of conscious, but Frank can make that sound profound. The production is kind of celebratory, but also kind of melancholic, capturing the uncertain feeling of the song perfectly. As one final way of tying everything together, at the near five minute mark, the song proper ends, and after a long silence, the interlude begins. Called "Interviews", it features a series of questions asked to Frank's brother Ryan, rappeproducedesigner Sage Elsesser (also known as Navy Blue), and others by skater and designer Mikey Alfred. It's a nostalgic piece, allowing the guys to goof around and answer questions about superpowers and secret talents. The final line of the album, spoken by Alfred, is "How far is a light year?". In the moment, it was innocuous, but as a way to play out Blonde, it takes on a deep, profound meaning. Frank has taken us on a journey, and that journey has ended for now, but there's so much more to go. please run that back though Blonde is one of the only albums I'd consider legitimately perfect. It's creative and unique, an album that people have since tried to recreate but not been able to. It's intimate, lush, and ambient, but also experimental and incredibly out there. The lyrics are heartbreaking and personal, but also existential and profound. There's a dichotomy to it, one that ties perfectly back to Frank's "two versions" he mentioned in the Post. Frank has seemed comfortable with taking his time on the next album, and considering how worth it Blonde was given the long wait, I have complete faith in him coming back and dropping another great album in the 2020s. No matter how long it takes. Thank you for reading. discussion questions
Where would you like to see Frank go on his next album? His future music has been previously described as "space reggae" and taking inspiration from “nightlife, Detroit, techno, house”.
There are many ways to interpret the overarching concept of Blonde. If you can sum up what the album means in 10 words or less, how would you?
Frank announced a release date for Blonde, missed it, and then went a full year before another update. Are artists entitled to keep fans updated of delays?
Frank made headlines on Blonde by releasing it independently aside from an initial exclusivity deal with Apple Music. Could you see this being the dominating future strategy, or do the labels have too much power for it to ever really work?
